DI Carol Jordan seeks the assistance of Doctor Tony Hill (known for his ability to form accurate criminal profiles and for uncovering serial killer Maggie Thomas) on a case involving a potential serial killer. The killer appears to target homosexual men and kills them with brutal, archaic remakes of torture devices. After two murders, Hill predicts the next victim will likely be a journalist or cop. As Hill predicted, police find the body of PC Merrick who received hundreds of burn marks on his chest and died from a conical object forced into him rectally. Police narrow in on a suspect, arresting a man they believe attacked fellow officer. Superintendent Cross brings Hill to the suspect's house so Hill can gain a sense for the suspects personality and provide his professional opinion on whether the suspect is the killer. Jordan determines that Cross planted evidence at the suspect's house and Assistant Chief Constable Brandon places him on leave. Jordan also discovers that she has an informant on her task force who is feeding information to an obnoxious news journalist.

Dr. Tony Hill continues to aid DI Carol Jordan in a search for a serial killer who murders the victims with archaic torture devices. The suspect arrested in Part One is set free but packs up to flee the country, scared he will be wrongly convicted as the police are targeting him and even planting evidence in his property. Police catch him and imprison him for breaking bond; he commits suicide in his jail cell. Coroner uncovers the source of burn marks on the latest victim, telling Jordan and Hill that the killer used metal cake-icing tips. Hill "embodies" the killer and has an important revelation as to the killer's identity. However, as he leaves Jordan a phone message, the killer shows up on Hill's doorstep, asking to use the phone. Tony awakes naked, strapped in a painful torture device that has him hanging by his arms with a load of brick strapped to his legs. Hill gets inside the killer's head, powerfully convincing the killer that he understands the killer and the killer's needs and wants. Hill attacks the killer, managing to get out of the device, seconds before police storm the building.

Maggie Thomas is a convicted child killer but, until now, has never divulged where her victims' bodies were buried and Tony reopens the case so that can put this right. Against advice he uses one of his students, Laura, to assist him but then Hattie, a friend of Laura, goes missing. Laura attempts to use the information she has on Maggie to investigate but then another victim is abducted, forcing Maggie to take the law into her own hands.

The remains of corpses are discovered whilst new foundations are being dug at the Norton Hotel, a building which stands on the site of an abbey, a fact which leads to a suspicion that these were religious killings. Then the hotel is burnt down and,as the first of a series of murders takes place, Carol asks for Tony's involvement. The strange thing is that these murders are identical to those committed some five hundred years earlier.

Newly promoted to Detective Chief Inspector, Carol investigates a murder which seems to bear the hallmark of gang boss Gavin Cochran. However Cochran is behind bars for murder and could not have done it. Carol asks Tony to work out any links between the two slayings, leading to the arrest of Cochran's brother George. But there is a fight during which George ends up in a coma. Gavin is released from prison for a compassionate visit, during which another killing takes place, allowing Tony to test his theory and trap the murderer.

The suspicious death of a hospital patient leads to post mortems being conducted on other patients who supposedly died of natural causes but now appear to have been murdered. Tony suspects the killer may be a person who believes they are releasing the victims from pain by their actions, guided by religious motives. However Islamic terrorists are also suspected, leading to the involvement of MI5. Carol is under scrutiny and needs Tony's help to keep her job.

With DCI Carol Jordan in the hospital after being mugged and struck by a car, psychologist Tony Hill assists the police in cases of missing children. The profile in this case is odd. The children are being abducted and held for several days before being killed, but the children are not sexually molested. The children all come from either broken or abusive homes and it is apparent that the killer either knew them or had access to information about them. In all cases, the children were induced to run away. As they research the case, the police realize that these murders have a long history and involve many children.

Tony Hill works with the police to solve the murder of the Johnsons, who were butchered in their flat. When a second victim, Sarah Maynard, is similarly killed they realize they have a serial killer on their hands. William MacAdam, a one-time killer is now one of Tony's students and these new murders are very similar to the ones he committed 30 years ago. He was released from prison as he was considered rehabilitated and has lost the use of both hands due to severe arthritis. Tony is convinced that MacAdam is their man, but he is quite shrewd and it will be very difficult to get the evidence required.

Dr. Tony Hill has his hands full. His principal interest is in solving a string of murders where he can find no apparent connection. A child molester, a divorced woman and an elderly pensioner are all violently killed and while there are a few similarities, the cases suggests that different personalities are at work. He begins to decipher the motives when he realizes that there are two killers working together, alternating their kills. Tony also finds that a woman he's met on an airplane is stalking him and developing a whole fantasy life around him. DCI Carol Jordan learns that she isn't pregnant but isn't sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

A sniper is at work and Tony Hill is having trouble profiling him. The killer leaves a playing card at each site but there is no apparent connection among the victims. As the deaths rise, people are walking the streets in fear, the media is in a frenzy and DCI Carol Jordan is under extreme pressure to solve the case. Tony has a bigger problem however when a medical exam reveals he has a brain tumor that is growing rapidly and is likely malignant.

When a rapist who was convicted on Tony's evidence is released Tony appears to be discredited. To make matters worse Carol has left for South Africa without even saying goodbye to him. He offers his help to her successor, Alex, another female officer, when a number of young women are found dead, their bodies buried in fields. Tony relates this to a sado-masochistic Internet site used by the murderer to lure his victims to their fate by playing, and then preying, on their sexual fantasies.

When a young prostitute is found dead, clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Hill sees an immediate parallel with the crimes committed by an incarcerated serial killer, Derek Tyler. There can be no doubt that Tyler is innocent of the most recent crime but the similarities - the women were all blond, young, bound to the bed and cut until they bled to death - cannot be ignored. Tyler was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic but Tony soon realizes that he wasn't hearing voices telling him to commit the murders but rather was taking instructions from someone. The case becomes very personal for the entire squad when DC Paula McIntyre, working in a sting operation to get the killer, is kidnapped by the man and may be his next victim.

In each case the victims - a property developer, a bishop, a judge - were brutally killed and the killers then immediately committed suicide. Tony thinks there is a connection to the Freemasons, but then realizes that they are dealing with a religious sect that glorifies suicide. He knows from the profile that the head of the sect will be a white male and from the religious symbolism that he will have six disciples, but who are they and how will they find this needle in a haystack?

When a young woman is raped and murdered after being kidnapped from a nightclub, Tony Hill is convinced that Jason Eglee is responsible. Ten years previously Tony had got him to confess to the rape of Tracy Bradshaw in what was Tony's first case working for the police. Eglee was released on parole, against Tony's advice, only three weeks before the most recent crime. When a crusading journalist questions Tony's interrogation technique and pushes for Eglee's original conviction to be overturned, DNA testing proves the man is innocent. The evidence notwithstanding, Tony is convinced that Eglee is guilty but he fears his tumor may have gotten worse and is clouding his judgment.

When an 11-year old girl is seen being dragged into a car kicking and screaming, the police issue an Amber alert. As the minutes and hours pass by, they know their chances of rescuing the girl diminishes. As Tony Hill reviews the evidence however, he becomes less and less convinced that this is an abduction by a stranger and believes that the girl must have known her attacker. The missing girl's mother is overwrought and her stepfather has a conviction for assault. A sudden twist however changes the entire nature of the investigation leading Tony and DI Alex Fielding to realize they had made a fundamental error at the outset.

Tony Hill and DI Alex Fielding find themselves investigating the ritualistic murder and mutilation of children. It becomes apparent to Tony that the perpetrators are casting voodoo-like spells on a variety of victims. The investigation reveals several possible suspects including a so-called preacher, Dr. Kingston and a brute of building contractor whose building site is shut down when a young boy's heart is found buried there. The power of suggestion begins to affect several of the team, including DC Paula McIntyre who finds herself hospitalized from a strange affliction.

The police investigate a series of rapes and murder of young, professional women in the Bradford area. After attacking them, he dresses the victim in a previous victims clothes and leaves their ID on the body. As the investigation continues, they learn from DNA that the man is responsible for at least seven murders over the years, but that he has never been arrested and as such, are unable to identify him. In a separate case, a former patient who has run away from his care home, Jack, contacts Tony. As a child, Jack killed his family and the police are concerned that he may lash out again.

Tony Hill assists the police in investigating a series of murders. His profile suggests that the man committing these crimes may come forward as a potential witness and the police soon focus in on Bernard Kelly. In his mid-30's and still living at home with a domineering mother, he seems to fit his profile, but Tony has nagging doubts as he finds significant differences in style between some of the attacks. During this time Tony has a house guest, his old friend from university Jonathan Good who is also a psychologist. As time goes by however, he begins to behave erratically. DI Alex Fielding is up for promotion to DCI but is having doubts, as it would likely mean having to relocate to a new city.

Tony Hill finds himself in unfamiliar surroundings when he travels to Texas to assist the local district attorney in the case of Darius Grady who is accused of murdering his wife and two children. Tony had already met Grady when the latter was stationed at a US military base near Bradfield and was charged with the rape of a local 15-year old. He was sent home by the military before he could be prosecuted in the UK but is using the same defense in the murder of his family as he did then: that he is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from his service in Iraq. While he doesn't find that Grady is suffering from PTSD, Tony finds far too many holes in the case for him to believe Grady is guilty.

Several bodies are discovered buried in wasteland. They range from all walks of life and ages but each body is incomplete and their hands have been tied. This leads Tony to suspect that a sadomasochism ring may be involved and leads him to the dominatrix Elektra, who tells him about her clientèle. Sometimes the mildest people outwardly have the darkest secrets.

Another victim disappears and a severed finger is sent to constable Chris Collins in an envelope, suggesting that the killer is into playing cat and mouse games with him. Chris, a new young constable whose attitude Alex dislikes, then disappears and is abducted by the murderer who strips him and strings him up. Tony realizes that the killer is the sort of person that anybody would trust - such as a doctor - as he races to save Chris's life.

Tony attends a conference of psychologists, where he is a guest speaker and where he meets an old friend Rachel White, another delegate. He has drinks with her in her room but leaves before having sex. Next morning she is found dead and he was the last person to see her alive, marking him as a suspect. Then another psychologist is also murdered whilst Alex investigates a serial killer whose targets are prostitutes.

Tony is allowed to assist in the investigations. He sees the murders as ritualistic as 'Power Not Truth' was written in the dead doctors' blood. He also begins to see a connection with the murders of the prostitutes and, against Alex's advice, offers himself as bait to trap the killer.

Two young men are found murdered, the only connection being that skin from one of them is found under the other's fingernails. As other bodies are found, Tony deduces that a sadistic gay murderer is abducting white boys and forcing them to kill each other. Meanwhile Michael Bryant, the cannibal killer whom Tony helped to put away, sends him a message from the secure unit where he is incarcerated, telling Tony that he is planning to escape and will see him soon.

An Asian man is killed but the pattern is different to the serial killings of the white boys which appears to have stopped. However, Ellie, a young widow, is abducted and, in the search to find her, Tony looks for comparisons with the other murders. Bryant, claiming that he has found God, asks for an audience with the secure unit's chaplain, whom he then kills, making his escape in the chaplain's robes.

Another serial killer is at work. This one kills homeless men by stabbing them through the heart but a bizarre ritual is also at work because the bodies are bathed and wrapped up in paper before they are left around the town's business area. Alex is called away and her place taken by the young Oxbridge graduate Hall,of whom Tony is initially suspicious but he turns out to have a psychology degree and to be a big fan of Tony's work. A more sinister fan,clearly Bryant,is leaving 'presents' on Tony's door-step.

When the woman area mental health commissioner is murdered - with Bryant the culprit - Tony is given police protection and sergeant Kevin Jeffries moves in with him. At the same time he is trying to unravel the mystery of the dead homeless men,discovering that not all of them are what they first appear to be. His work,and life,however,will inevitably be interrupted by Bryant,leading to their final show-down.
