Thirteen years after giving up her career as a lawyer to focus on husband and family, Alicia Florrick returns to a large law firm to start over again. Her husband, the State's Attorney for Cook County, was forced to resign after a sex scandal involving public funds and prostitutes. On her first day, she is assigned a pro bono case and is defending a woman accused of killing her ex-husband and trying to cover it up with a fake carjacking. The previous trial ended in a hung jury which, Alicia learns, was very much leaning toward conviction.With the help of the firm's in-house investigator, Alicia looks to open up a new line of defense against the advice of the firm's senior female partner who previously handled the case.

Alicia is invited by senior partner Will Gardner to act as second chair in a law suit against the scion of a rich Chicago family who is being sued by a stripper for rape. The DA has refused to file criminal charges and the victim wants to extract some degree of justice. Alicia tends to believe her, especially after she turns down a very generous settlement offer, but she does carry a lot of baggage having worked as an escort for a period of time. The lawyers face a major problem when DNA testing seems to rule out the defendant. At home, Alicia's son and daughter are alone when someone anonymously drops off photos of their dad cavorting with a prostitute. Son Zach discovers something important however.

Alicia finds herself defending Kenny Chatham after he shows up at her office asking for help. Even he doesn't realize how serious it is until the police arrest him for felony murder. He and a friend had gone to a mutual acquaintance to pick up some marijuana and unable to get in, force a window. When their escapade is interrupted by a security guard, he runs off but when the guard is found dead, the friend claims Kenny killed him. Given her emotional involvement in the case, Alicia suggests that someone else be appointed as first chair. She's a bit surprised when the partners assign Cary to the job. He's keen to plead the case out and uses his charm on the young Assistant State's Attorney but Alicia is certain that Kenny is innocent and sets out to prove it.

The note isn't clear and they must decide which of two possible jurors it might be. In her private life, Alicia is interviewed by husband Peter's lawyer as they prepare for his appeal. He is looking for any information that would support their contention that Peter was lying or acting evasively at work not because he was involved in criminal acts but because he was trying to hide his philandering from her. When she finds evidence that he was home on a day he is accused of meeting someone, the evidence also reveals he may have been taking gifts.

Alicia takes on the case of three widows who are suing their dead husbands' former employers, a railway company, after they are killed in a train crash.The company is playing hardball and are seemingly ready and keen to go to court. The defense's argument is essentially that the company forced the men to work long hours and are therefore responsible for any errors that may have occurred. Alicia notices a discrepancy in another area however and they have only a few days to prepare a new defense. Alicia and Cary are interviewing for a new assistant. Alicia has also been arguing with her mother-in-law about the children and when they will visit their father. As tensions rise between them, she makes a point of telling her son that Alicia has been spending several late evenings with Will Gardner.

The firm takes on the automatic appeal of convicted murderer Clarence Wilcox who was convicted of killing a police officer during an armed robbery at a convenience store. Their argument is that a made-for-TV movie poisoned the jury pool but the appellate court denies them a re-trial. After meeting the man's wife, Alicia begins to wonder if they should launch an appeal based on the facts rather than technicalities. The woman claims her husband was with all of that evening but she wasn't put on the stand to testify because her previous record would have rendered the evidence less credible. As Alicia looks into the case, she discovers other anomalies, particularly as they relate to the police line-up and the eye witness who positively identified Wilcox as the culprit. Investigator Kalinda Sharma wants nothing to do with the case but tells Alicia to check on what the State knew with her husband, the imprisoned former State's Attorney. She's reluctant to do so but the the only way to be able to speak to him privately is to arrange for a conjugal visit.

Employees are on edge as Will Gardner and Diane Lockhart begin to cut positions and reduce costs. Alicia is expecting the worst when Will calls her into to his office but he in fact wants her to be the second chair in a lawsuit against Anna Loeb, the estranged daughter of the firm's absentee partner Jonas Stern. The woman is represented by storefront lawyer Ryan Alprin in a case where a pedestrian tripped over a cable and fell in front of Loeb's house and is now suing for her and her husband for $1.2 million, accusing them of negligence. Their lawyer decides on a unique argument: as Orthodox Jews, the Loebs couldn't repair the cable, which became detached on the Sabbath, as they are prohibited from working on that day. That defense soon runs into a problem and it's left to Alicia and investigator Kalinda to get to the root of the accusations. It all may fall apart however when Alicia learns something shocking about Alprin himself.

Alicia and Cary are assigned to prepare witnesses in the case of a university scientist who is accused of setting her lab on fire. The woman faces a possible 15 years in prison and is adamant that she is innocent. Unfortunately, her rambling manner makes her a less than ideal witness and they decide not to put her on the stand. They're preparing a reasonable case but come across some key evidence from one of the witnesses. Alicia also finds herself unexpectedly in court when the judge in her husband's case not only grants an evidentiary hearing but agrees to hear arguments about the possibility of bail. She's not sure she's prepared to suddenly have him back but she is certainly expected to say so in court. At home, her son Zach sets up a video camera to see who is leaving the brown envelopes they've been getting.

The firm's long absent senior partner, Jonas Stern, is back but is also facing a number a serious charges after a minor car accident including driving under the influence and assaulting a police officer. Jonas is convinced that it's a police plot to get back at him for all the times he took them on in court. He plans to defend himself but will use Alicia to front for him. She's glad to take on the case but his constant interference is proving to be a major challenge. Jonas insists he wasn't drunk and when Alicia learns exactly what happened, he won't let her use the information in court. Meanwhile, her husband Peter's case is much in the news again with one of his escorts is making the rounds on the talk show circuit revealing many of their private moments and apparently planning a tell-all book.

Alicia takes on the case of a juvenile first offender, Terence Ramsay, who is charged with assault but claims he was bullied into at fight at school. She manages to negotiate a reduced plea with the prosecutor and no jail time but the judge in the case, Henry Baxter, inexplicably rejects the plea bargain and sentences the boy to 9 months incarceration. As Alicia looks into the judge's background, she finds a clear pattern in his sentencing - white offenders get probation while African-Americans always seem to get jail-time. A detailed analysis of other cases seems to show that the current pattern of sentencing is less than 2 years old so they set out find what may have happened to Judge Baxter to cause the change. Alicia's daughter finally makes a friend at school but runs into problems because of her Dad's past. Meanwhile, Diane is approached by representatives of the Democratic party trying to recruit her to run for a judgeship in the next elections. Her recruiters' reaction to her intervention in the Baxter situation isn't what she had hoped.

Diane hires a ballistics expert, Kurt McVeigh, to provide crucial evidence. They have another suspect in mind but the only witness they have is the suspects wife and spousal privilege seemingly prevents her from testifying.

Peter doesn't have a lot of faith in his trial attorney however. Having lost his job, Carey Agos gladly accepts an offer from an unexpected source.

Alicia gets permission to assign Kalinda to do some leg work and finds the source of the original information posted to the web site.

Their jubilation comes to a sudden end when lawyers Patti Nyholm and Louis Canning advise them that they are being sued for $50 million. The basis of their suit is that the judge is a friend of Will Gardner and that the huge settlement was payback for past corrupt activities. They depose anyone affiliated with the case leaving Carey Agos, who has just returned to the firm, as the only lawyer to represent them. Meanwhile, Alicia comes across a large uncashed check in Kalinda's personal file. She calls the number on the check but the man at the other end refuses to identify himself. She tells Kalinda what's happened and she finally tells Alicia what she's been hiding. She also prepares to go to war.

The firm is facing bankruptcy and is trying to avoid liquidation. David Lee has announced that he is leaving and taking his lucrative divorce practice with him. A judge agrees to to allow them to reorganize and appoints a trustee, Clarke Hayden, to oversee the process. He casts a wary eye on everything from the art work to the fact that Diane and Will are co-managing partners. He proves surprisingly helpful when it comes to David Lee however. Alicia is juggling several balls as she tries to keep her son Zack out of jail after he's stopped by an aggressive State Trooper. Zack actually comes up with a very practical weapon for his defense. Alicia is also having to deal with a political reporter, Peggy Byrne, who wants to know more about her personal life than she is prepared to provide. Kalinda meanwhile has to deal with her husband, who has now arrived in Chicago.

He turns down a reasonable settlement convinced that he can get more but they may have a problem with one of the jurors. Diane approaches Maddie Hayward, their new landlord, in the hope of getting some relief on the rent but Maddie asks to meet Alicia. The trustee, Clarke Hayden, is starting to make personnel cuts Kalinda and her husband Nick continue to spar and it's beginning to affect his her job. She finally confides in Alicia.

Meanwhile, Ira Gold is having fits with an aggressive journalist who wants to interview Alicia - and who is aware of rumors to the effect that Alicia and Will Gardner had an affair. Eli solves the problem, sort of. Kalinda continues her strange relationship with her ex-husband.

He has no idea which side of his interests are being investigated so he's called all of them in. Kalinda learns that the problems relate to an FBI confidential informant who has disappeared. When that informant is found dead, Bishop knows he will be arrested. Peter meanwhile is working hard to win a straw poll but Eli is desperately trying stop a blogger from printing allegations that Peter only recently slept with a campaign worker.

New Assistant State's Attorney Laura Hellinger is proving quite effective and Will isn't scoring very many points with Judge Harrington Creary. That evening, Will runs into Judge Creary in a bar and is shocked when Creary tells him he's a liar and a thief and that his client is guilty. The next day Alicia asks the judge to recuse himself and when he refuses, she insists on a hearing to determine whether he should be removed. The judge denies under oath having said any of the statements attributed to him. It turns out the judge has something of a drinking problem. Meanwhile, Alicia's daughter Grace takes an interest in a fellow student, Connor. Cary Agos is severely beaten in a parking lot.

Diane and Alicia represent Dale Lamborn who is in Federal Court accused of embezzlement and filing fraudulent tax returns. A key piece of prosecution evidence is a taped conversation between Lamborn and his same-sex spouse. Diane and Alicia argue that it should be excluded as it is a confidential communication with a spouse. The prosecution, lawyer Bucky Stabler, argues that the Defense of Marriage Act does not recognize same sex spouses. Into the fray comes high-profile lawyer Jeremy Breslow, a strong advocate of same sex marriage. It's not clear to Diane and Alicia that he has Lamborn's best interest at heart. Meanwhile, Alicia's mother shows up once again widowed - he was her third husband - but in need of legal advice as she has been disinherited. Anna denies doping but she did terminate a pregnancy and took medication but she refuses to make that public. It turns out that witness is the head of the local Democratic party and his testimony relates to Eli arranging to pack a straw poll with seniors from an old folks home. As both lawyers spar back and forth deftly countering each others thrusts, the case begins to affect Peter's run for governor - and results in Peter's mother Jackie being called as a prosecution witness. It all takes on a different tone when the police tell her they've found the killer's car with Alicia's home address programmed in the GPS. With Diane going, Will has a proposition for Alicia that may change her mind about leaving the firm. Meanwhile Alicia has been working with a couple, Cathy and Ryan and their surrogate. They get bad news however from an amniocentesis but the surrogate, Tara, is refusing to have the pregnancy terminated. David Lee surprises Alicia by volunteering to help her out in the case - he's out to sue the hospital. At home, Alicia is worried about Grace who seems to be growing up very fast.

Diane Lockhart and the firm are being sued by one of its paralegals, Chrissy Quinn, for creating a hostile work environment. More specifically, she says Diane and others sexually harassed her. Chrissy's lawyer is Diane long time nemesis Viola Walsh. They hire the seemingly ditsy but brilliant Elsbeth Tascioni to represent them. Meanwhile, Peter's inauguration is approaching and his mother Jackie is sticking her nose in where it doesn't belong. It leads to a confrontation with the unions and a situation where Jackie's help is required. Diane is becoming suspicious of Alicia.

Having learned from a client that Alicia will be taking one of her top clients with her to a new firm, Diane Lockhart tells Will who goes ballistic. He challenges Alicia and convenes a meeting of the partners to have her fired. Will then sets his sights on the fourth year associates and they are all soon out on the street. Both sides engage in a battle to keep clients on side. Lockhart Gardner plays hardball insinuating to clients that Alicia was fired due to financial irregularities and David Lee makes sure they can't move into their new offices. Their main concern is to keep ChumHum as a client and both sides are soon in court battling it out. In the end, its Peter Florrick who gives Alicia a helping hand.

It's now a week since Alicia left the firm and everyone is still working out of her apartment. Generally things aren't going well for the new firm of Florrick Agos. They're still struggling to keep clients, they can't find office space and they don't have much money coming in. They turn to someone who knows about finance to help them out: Clarke Hayden. Zach thinks someone may be spying on them when he notices the video-cam on his mother's computer is on. Alicia meanwhile finds herself being deposed in a $6 million lawsuit against Lockhart & Gardner over a failed adoption. It all goes wrong and it's Alicia who may be liable. Will Gardner takes on the case of Jeffrey Grant who was seemingly stopped for DUI. They had represented Jeffrey's father a few months before and when Will finally confronts ASA Geneva Pine about the case the truth comes out: Jeffrey is to be charged with murdering a college student. The police have DNA from his father indicating a familial match to the killer.

Kalinda continues vetting Damian Boyle but runs up against a detective who owes Boyle a favor and seems intent on keeping her in jail, at least overnight. Alicia agrees to invite Peter to the new firm's Christmas party and has to invite mother-in-law Jackie as well - but forgets to invite her own mother. Meanwhile, the media has got hold of the video footage showing Jim Moody from Peter's campaign delivering stuffed ballot boxes on election night. Alicia is livid when she hears about it, particularly as it could affect their son Zach. She tells Peter in no uncertain terms to resolve the situation.

Everyone begins to deal with Will's death. Alicia is in denial and can only wonder what he meant to tell her in an interrupted telephone message he left just before his death. She asks the judge who has no idea why he might have been calling. The ASA's assistant tells her Will was quite angry about someone about stealing one of his clients. At LG Diane delivers the news of Will's death and David Lee begins phoning clients to reassure them. Elsewhere, Kalinda tries to figure out just what happened in the courtroom and who might have fired the fatal bullet, Will's client or the police who were trying to subdue the gunman. She also visits the gunman with a message.

After attending Will's funeral, Diane and Alicia talk about finding a way to merge their two firms. Unfortunately, they're overheard by Damian Boyle who promptly tells David Lee what is going on. Kalinda soon hears that they are out to oust Diane as the firm's managing partner and gets information that helps Diane. Not to be outdone, Lee turns to an old adversary. When Alicia hears that State's Attorney Jimmy Castro has promised heads will roll after the courtroom shooting, she becomes concerned that ASA Finn Polmar might become a target. Finn assures her that he and Castro are old friends - he was best man at Castro's wedding - and there's nothing to worry about. Meanwhile, David Lee faces off against Alicia and Cary in a nasty divorce case.

With Alicia home sick, Cary tells Diane Lockhart there are conditions attached to any possible merger. Diane decides not to proceed but David Lee has another prospective partner and they soon merge with Louis Canning's firm. Alicia also represents Finn Polmar, the ASA who was in the courtroom with Will Gardner when he was shot. It's clear the new State's Attorney has every intention of laying the blame for the shooting at Finn's feet. The NSA's surveillance of Alicia begins to unravel when one of the employees monitoring her seeks legal advice from the firm over a possible security infraction, eventually telling them of the surveillance. She warns Peter and he contacts a U.S. Senator who sits on the Intelligence Committee who assures him his conversations aren't being monitored. Peter has away of testing that and getting the NSA out of their lives.

Alicia, as always, has a lot on her plate. She finally gets client Colin Sweeney to sign off on a merger with less than an hour to go before the documents have to be filed with the court. Sweeney's engagement party is underway and unfortunate one of the guests, Morgan Donnelly, hangs herself in the bathroom. Only the police don't think it's suicide but murder. Det. Lou Johnson is intrigued by the fact that this is the second time Alicia has been in Sweeney's house when a death has occurred. Alicia begins to wonder if Sweeney was in her view the entire time she said he was. The police arrest Sweeney's fiancée, Renata Ellard. Eli meanwhile is worried when a picture of Zach holding a bong appears on a website. Finn Polmar has been taken off a couple of the firms cases so Alicia suggests he run against SA James Castro in the upcoming election as he would be protected and can't be fired.

Alicia is called for jury duty and meets an attractive man, Daniel Irwin. She's still confused about Will's death and is emotional but accepts his invitation to lunch. She turns to her mother for advice. Diane Lockhart meanwhile represents Robbie Pollard, the grandson of one of their major clients Lyle Pollard. Lyle admits to writing fake reviews for a web site, Silk Road, that sells contraband goods including drugs. He says he was paid anonymously and didn't buy or sell any of the goods but his works abetted the crime. Finn Polmar is responsible for the case and claims to have a witness to Robbie's crimes. It soon turns into a murder investigation. Meanwhile, Diane begins to wonder if David Lee and Louis Canning are plotting to get rid of her.

Alicia represents James Paisley who is in the process of competing a $3.2 billion merger. He is also being sued by the former CFO who claims he was fired because he was gay. Louis Canning agrees to a $140,000 settlement but decides to go to court after Paisley suggests in a TV interview that the 1% are being victimized and are like the Jews in Nazi Germany. His first try at apologizing only puts him into a deeper hole. A third attempt, by Alicia, blows up in her face as well. At LG meanwhile, Diane is working with Rayna Hecht on a major class-action lawsuit and she's certain that Louis Canning is up to no good. In fact, he's trying to recruit the company they're suing as potential clients. Peter Florrick meanwhile hesitates to pursue his endorsement of Finn Polmar after James Castro suggests that Finn and Alicia are lovers.

After a video conference with the couple suing Alicia and Lockhart Gardner for $6 million over an adoption that wasn't completed as promised, David Lee and Louis Canning forget to turn off their video camera. Alicia, Cary and several others hear Lee and Canning discussing not only their strategy to displace Diane as their managing partner but their strategy to destroy Florrick Agos. In defending themselves, Alicia and Cary may have reached a crossroads in both their relationship and their partnership. Diane meanwhile tries to convince the remaining swing vote, Howard Lyman, to vote in her favor at the partners meeting. Peter is going to withdraw his support for Finn Polmar's candidacy for State's Attorney and aims to convince his new choice to take the job. Meanwhile, Alicia is trying to organize a farewell party for Zach who will be leaving for a summer job before he starts college. Grandmothers are getting in the way.

Everyone is thrown for a loop when Cary is arrested for abetting the transportation of nearly a kilo of heroin with the State's Attorney requesting bail of $1.3 million. Cary suspects it's related to the police trying to get to Lemond Bishop. For Bishop, it means someone in his crew is talking to the police. After the judge rules Alicia ineligible to represent Cary - also because of her link to Bishop - she turns to Diane to represent him. They go through the opposition research - essentially, all the dirt the opposition may have on Alicia. Those aren't the only revelations: her brother Owen's boyfriend and her mother outrageous behavior are also at issue. The list of issues include some elements of Alicia's life though Eli holds back on any informer about the governor. Eli gets a revelation of his own. Alicia speaks to her mother and Owen but Lemond Bishop refuses to take his business elsewhere.

When Kalinda approaches Lemond Bishop to see if there's someone in prison who could watch his back she learns an important fact - the drugs in the case were in Chicago a few weeks before Cary supposedly advised Bishop's crew on how to import it and therefore the charge doesn't stand. Judge Cuesta refuses to withdraw Cary's plea agreement however unless Diane can prove the State's Attorney's office knew this beforehand. Alicia meanwhile is having trouble preparing for her debate with Prady but gets help from an unexpected source.

She's already accepted the settlement offered by the firm to end her partnership but when she approaches Diane and the others, they're more than happy to have her back as a name partner. When she later gets a call from one of clients who spoke to Diane and was told Alicia wasn't returning to the firm, Alicia thinks the firm is trying to pull a fast one and steal her clients. Meanwhile, Cary decides to give evidence against Lemond Bishop unaware that Kalinda has already made a deal with ASA Geneva Pine. Kalinda's actions put her in great danger however.

Now unemployed and having a crisis of confidence, Alicia finds little of interest to fill her time until she comes in contact with Bret Tetro, a former client who she successfully defended against a charge of attempted murder 6 years ago. He's now facing a first degree murder charge in the same case after the man he supposedly tried to kill has now died. She tries to get Finn Polmar to take the case but he's overloaded so she plunges in. The judge has already ruled that double jeopardy doesn't apply and the ASA Matan Brody tells her she has a big hole in her case. She goes through the old file and recalls the investigation she, Cary and Kalinda undertook. The prosecution had evidence that a deceased witness from the first trial, Lexie, perjured herself and wants all the evidence from that trial thrown out.

After receiving a frantic call from Jacob Rickter, Alicia learns that he is being held incommunicado by the police, who deny having him in custody. Alicia and Finn Polmar manage to have him brought before a judge but the police have now charged him, insisting that he confessed to crimes before he was arrested. At the firm Diane, David Lee and the other partners are shocked to find that Louis Canning's wife Simone was hired by them as a paralegal. After Diane releases her from her employment, an outraged Louis Canning threatens to take them apart. Elsewhere, Lemond Bishop's sleazy lawyer Charles Lester is looking for Kalinda. Fearing that her friends may be in danger, Kalinda comes out of hiding.

Alicia represents a woman who was fired from her job at a tech company because she failed a polygraph she took because the company was looking for who's stealing company secrets but that was not the reason why she failed. So Alicia takes the company to court and they make all sorts of fuss. Alicia learns from Jason that there was no theft at the company so the polygraph was baseless. They then raise the issue that because the company has dealings with the government that they are within their right to have polygraph tests. Alicia then seeks out her former client who worked at the NSA for help. And this brings her to the attention of the NSA. Eli is told by Ruth that Alicia needs to be with Peter when he announces his bid for the Presidency. Eli considers airing something that could derail his chances. At Lockhart, the partners are at odds over who to hire. Alicia looks into Jason's past and learns something unsettling.
