When Emilyn Simpson is found dead in her house, DCI Barnaby's instincts all lead him to suspect murder. Although she was elderly and everyone seems to have liked her, it seem she may have seen something in the woods that she shouldn't have. There are numerous suspects: the local doctor who lies about his alibi, Iris Rainbird, the local busybody who seems to live beyond her means or her son Dennis, who is the local undertaker. Barnaby also receives information that a death the previous year may not have been an accident. When two other residents of Badger's Drift are murdered, Barnaby uncovers an illicit love affair that the protagonists must keep secret.

There is Ken and Heather Beavers whom Barnaby discovers had a very interesting past; Sylvie Gamelin who has just announced that she is donating the several million pound inheritance she received on her 18th birthday; her father Guy who who is absolutely opposed to the donation and her dipsomaniac mother, Felicity; and Christopher Wainwright who may also be hiding something from his past. When another murder is committed, it is left to Barnaby to sift through the backgrounds of the various individuals to find the motive behind the two murders.

The mystery deepens when it turns out Cavendish's housekeeper, Emily Beavis, died in a fall at the quarry site some 18 months previously. Description ▼
The discovery of a man's naked body in the center of a crop circle brings UFO fans flocking to Midsomer Parva and the field owned by Sir Harry Chatwyn. With a hole at the base of the spine, a chunk of hair missing, burn marks and a terrified expression, the corpse bears all the hallmarks of alien abduction. DCI Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Gavin Troy think stories of flying saucers are a smoke-screen for murder, but extra-terrestrial expert Lloyd Kirby is convinced otherwise. Lloyd is brought in for questioning but former diplomat Sir Christian Aubrey vouches for his honesty. A post-mortem confirms electrocution, but the victim is a London criminal with no interest in the countryside or aliens. Then the body of a local burglar is found in a crop circle with an identical set of injuries. There are also plenty of earthly goings-on in Midsomer Parva. Sir Harry shares a mistress, doctor's receptionist Sally Boulter, with his daughter Lucy's husband. As a third victim is discovered, Barnaby must discover who is responsible - or if extra-terrestrial powers are truly at work.

Melissa Townsend is young, rich, attractive and has a superior attitude that is most off-putting. She is generally disliked by almost everyone in the village and Barnaby is called when she starts to receive threatening letters. Soon after a break in at the local vets, Melissa is found dead, having been injected with a deadly substance. Among the suspects are Melissa's friend Sally, the vet and several other villagers. The police's biggest problem is that they start to run out of suspects as, one by one, they too are murdered. In the end, the solution revolves around blackmail and someone's desire for social acceptability.

When two bodies are discovered by the side of a fishing stream, Barnaby and Troy have yet more murders to solve. Isobel Hewitt had a zest for life that some can only hope for. She loves to drive her red Jaguar at top speed and generally enjoyed the finer things in life. Although loved by many, there were those who weren't quite so charmed by her. Margaret Seagrove was convinced that she was the member of the local fishing club using weighted lures in the local stream. Her nephew and his wife, with whom she resided, saw her as a burden now that she had spent most of her accumulated capital. The second victim is the local doctor, Duncan Goff, a well-known philanderer who had affairs with many of the local ladies. The police must first determine if both were intended victims or if one was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

When DCI Barnaby investigates the suicide of a man who was universally disliked in the village, he begins to question whether the man actually killed himself. Possible motives include his ex-wife's desire to stop being pestered by him, her current lover's wish to be rid of him once and for all, the man's miserly treatment of all those he came in contact with, and even a non-motive motive: death by local-loony-bin-inmate. When other murders follow, some of those motives become less likely, and Barnaby enlists the aid of an old friend who now runs the local sanitarium and uses her powers of observation to do some profiling of the murderer.

DCI Barnaby and DS Scott investigate the death of Rick Turner who fell - or was pushed - off the roof of his house. Turner was a well-known local solicitor but the investigation reveals that there is considerable sum of money missing from client accounts. As well, his downstairs neighbor, Jack Wilmot, has been missing since the day Turner died. Not only is Wilmot's wife Antonia acting strangely but Turner's wife may not be as aggrieved as she is making out to be. In searching for Wilmot, they also become suspicious of his team mates in the local pub quiz league, Otto Benham and Peter Blagdon. When one of them is killed, the police are sure they are dealing with murder. The solution to the crime rests with locating a hidden wine cellar, uncovering a clever con and resolving a case of mis-identification.

DCI Barnaby and Sgt. Scott investigate the murder of Arthur Leggott. The man had recently moved into a care home but was found dead in his house. He was a respected music teacher and had been a close friend of Joan Alder the late, great composer. There had been rumors that Leggott may have had in his belongings a rare piece of sheet music from Alder's early years. When such a piece turns up at auction, Barnaby is convinced it was stolen in the first place. Joan Alden's husband, her agent, a young woman who now claims to be her daughter, her putative father and an antique dealer are all suspects. As the death count rises the field of suspects narrows, but the solution lies in a letter handwritten by Joan Alder and and the infatuation of someone who loved her in their youth.

Winyard, a once beautiful but isolated house set deep in the woods, has fallen into decay and is believed haunted by some locals. It attracts the attention of Joyce Barnaby, who has joined a preservationist group crusading against profiteering realtors like Harriet Davis, who conspires with her lover, builder Gerry Moore, to rehab historic old homes for personal gain. When a househunting young yuppie couple are stonewalled by Davis, they decide to inspect the house on their own. After their bodies are discovered garroted by piano wire, Chief Inspector Barnaby arrives in Midsomer Newton and recruits local constable Ben Jones to assist him in investigating the double murder.

Barnaby and Jones investigate the death of Marian Slade who is found face down in a stream just a short walk from the Midsomer Barton village fête. Oddly, Barnaby encounters a woman and her son who bear a striking resemblance to a pair who were murdered eight years before. They soon discover another body, that of Slade's neighbor, Mark Castle. Both victims had been mildly sedated with the same drug, leading to the conclusion that they were killed by the same person. The motive for the crime is related to the death of Slade's daughter Bella many years before and an abortion that everyone has kept secret all these years.

DCI Barnaby and DC Johns investigate the murder of Martin Barrett, who was killed with a shotgun blast while he was standing in his kitchen. It doesn't take them long to realize that Barrett was a blackmailer with several of the local villagers under his thumb. They include the local pub keeper who didn't report a very valuable painting as part of his late father's estate thereby avoiding death taxes; a local businessman, Richard Florian, who may be involved in a bit of smuggling; and Sir John Waverley a prominent local citizen who also happens to be a member of the Police Board. What the police soon learn is that Barrett had a business associate, one who tells them that Barrett had one particularly lucrative blackmail target in his sights.

Description ▼
Out on a family excursion, accompanied by Joyce, daughter Cully and Joyce's mother who is visiting, the Chief Inspector soon finds himself investigating the murder of Mildred Danvers, whose flask of brandy was apparently spiked with barbiturates. They were all there to attend the annual Skimmington Fair, a decades-old village fête that essentially pitted the women against the misogynist men. There are several suspects including Henry Marwood who returned Danvers' flask to her but has lied to the police about it; the local Doctor who seems just a tad too quick to pronounce the death to be of natural causes; and the Rev. Anthony Gant who, in addition to being Mrs. Danvers' cousin, was also mounting a court action against the Skimmington women in a attempt to stop what he saw as the annual denigration of men. A second murder, this time from a target shooting rifle, clearly puts Barnaby and DS Jones in the middle of a major investigation. A third death leads to the discovery of hidden family connections and the solution to the mystery.

There's friction among the villagers in Elverton where there is widespread disagreement over the construction of a large Goodfare supermarket. Those in favor see it as a convenient way of getting their shopping done without having to drive great distances while those opposed see it as the beginning of the end of village life. Emotions are running high, including a bout of fisticuffs at a village meeting. With all of this going on around them, DCI Barnaby and DC Jones investigate the murder of Frank Hopkirk, an environmental consultant who was in the village working on the supermarket project. He was found stabbed to death in an old mill but as the police investigate, they learn that he was something of a Lothario. In fact, several of the leading citizens of Elverton are involved in sex games, from role-playing to mild S&M, all of which the dead man happily participated in. Jealousy however played the major role in his death.

Simon Bright's girlfriend, Laura Sharp, is nowhere to be found but the death of the aging village Lothario and the attempted murder of another of her friends narrows the list of possible murderers somewhat. Barnaby is convinced that one of Laura's ex-lovers is responsible but given her rather active life, the question becomes which one?

Especially bitter is Penny Galsworthy, wife of another T.A. officer and garage owner Tim, whose daughter killed herself after being impregnated by Jamie, and she stalks him obsessively. George Barkham, another soldier, missed out on being promoted to a partnership at Matt Parkes' haulage firm, thanks to Jamie, who is also black-mailing George's daughter. The Parkes' yard is torched, causing an explosion and a watch-man almost killed. Then a criminal associate of Jamie and Jamie himself both meet their maker in quick succession. Ultimately Barnaby has the sad duty of arresting somebody who has rid the community of a waste of space after several days of misrule.

Description ▼
Nancy Dewar's hooded corpse is found in a river, having left her alcoholic husband Michael to live with art historian Philip Hamilton. Her death resembles that of a woman in a fresco Hamilton is restoring at a local church. Michael names shopkeeper Ewan Evans as his alibi and whilst Ewan is perturbed that his art student son Noah has a book depicting medieval tortures, the reverend Martha Hillcott hopes to sell a cottage on church land belonging to previous vicar, the ailing Arthur Gould and his daughter Ava, to raise money to save the frescoes from rising river water. On the night she died, Nancy, as one of the church council, was about to sell her vote to Martha to support the sale of the cottage. But then two more murders occur, both styled after pictures in the frescoes. As the river bursts its banks and villagers take refuge in the church, Barnaby works out that the killings were not based in religion but perpetrated to keep hidden a shameful secret, a case less of Let Us Pray than Let Us Prey.

Description ▼
Bernard King, owner of Finchmere airfield, is knocked unconscious and dropped to his death from a plane. The wrench used to hit him belongs to elderly mechanic Duggie Wingate, who has long been in a feud with Molly Darnley, whom he claims sent his sister Ellie to her death when both women were in the Air Transport Auxiliary in World War Two so she could marry Ellie's lover Henry. Molly's weak son Perry, Bernard's business partner, is being taken to court by a local protest group, led by Eddie Rayner, who blames the Darnley family for the death of his wife. The Darnleys also have financial problems and Molly is shocked to discover that Perry, goaded by his cynical wife Miranda, hopes to sell Finchmere. Nelson then discovers that the airfield is being used for smuggling and wonders if smugglers killed the two victims to keep them quiet. An air display is held, featuring young pilots Alex, Perry's son, and Duggie's great-nephew Gavin Hopkirk, who are love rivals for Eddie's daughter Jessie, Finchmere's receptionist and Gavin's plane is found to have been tampered with. Both lads admit to smuggling involvement but Barnaby believes the motives for the killings are not business-inspired and go beyond the activities of the flying club.

Pub landlady Hannah Altman is crushed to death whilst assisting illusionist Gideon Latimer at a charity magic show to raise funds for Midsomer Oaks church. The trick was sabotaged, suggesting that Gideon was the intended victim. He had received hate mail linking his act to Satanism and a particularly vocal critic is zealous curate Andrew Maplin. Certainly robed figures conduct midnight rituals in the grounds of Gideon's mansion, once owned by an eighteenth century paganist and one of them kills Andrew, leaving his corpse on a stone altar. Hannah was having an affair as is Gideon's wife, widening the list of suspects, whilst the vicar's wife Lorna Soane is revealed as a descendant of the eighteenth century Satanist. There is another slaying before Barnaby works out who committed murder by magic.

Cyclist Greg Eddon is killed after winning the local leg of a national race, beating team mate Mitch McCordell at the last minute. Mitch's father Des, who owns the DJM racing stable tells Barnaby the race is make or break for them but there are clearly factions as Mitch's brother Aiden had sent threatening texts to Greg after he was seen kissing Aiden's girlfriend Amber. Local environmentalist Gerry Bleacher opposes the races, claiming that people die because of them and organizer and pub landlady Mary Appleton receives messages accusing her of murder. Des admits that DJM's sponsorship depends on Mitch's continuing success as the company is cash strapped whilst Reece Dexter, who runs rival team Ravondale, accuses Des of corruption and persuades Aiden to cycle for his stable. Another murder follows before Barnaby is able to save a further victim and identify who, in the cycling world, was guilty of literally breaking the chain.

Brandon Monkford is found dead on top of a statue created by womanizing artist Lance Auden at the grand opening of Brandon's sculpture park. Suspects abound as his wife Alexandra was having an affair with art critic Daniel Fargo, the park would mean an end to his daughter Rachel's climbing centre and villagers led by Brin Dunne opposed the park on environmental grounds. The person with the most to gain, however, is Brandon's groundsman Tony Pitt, the sole beneficiary in his will, who annoys everybody - including his wife Summer - with his decision to carry on Brandon's vision and who predictably becomes the next victim. When a third corpse is found, like the others attached to a statue in the park, Barnaby must discover who is, literally, practising a dying art.

The one exception is Peter's brother Christopher who regards his brother 's claim to be false and encourages the dig, falling out with Zoe's husband Alex, whom he accuses of exploiting the situation.
