Young Alex Godman, English-raised son of Russian exiles Dmitri and Oksana, is a successful city fund banker in London whilst, in Israel, powerful drug dealer Vadim Kalyagin survives an attempt on his life. When Alex's bank is accused of dealing with black-listed Russian firms and faces ruin his uncle Boris suggests he gets shipping magnate Semiyon Kleiman to invest with him and arranges a meeting in Tel Aviv, though Alex doubts the legality of Semiyon's plan. Boris is murdered and Semiyon tells Alex that Kalyagin, his father's old business rival in Russia, is responsible. At Semiyon's suggestion Alex meets up with Kalyagin to call a truce.

Lyudmilla Nikolayeva is abducted in Cairo by human traffickers whilst in Mumbai Semiyon meets Dilly Mahmood to thwart another business rival Benny Chopra. In London Alex agrees to Semiyon's proposal and learns that he knew his father in Russia. Semiyon makes further plans in Prague, summoning Alex to help him take over Jan Reznik's business from Kalyagin's influence. Returning to London Alex receives disturbing news about Reznik - and his father - whilst Lyudmilla learns her fate.

Dimitri is released from hospital to his family's care but Oksana discovers his guilty secret and sees off his lover whilst Alex is approached by another potential investor, Mexican Antonio Mendez, who claims to have known him at university and invites Rebecca and Alex to stay at his villa in Antibes. Alex is wary of him as Antonio tells him he wants him to persuade Semiyon to help him expand his fishing fleet business in Europe. Whilst Semiyon is grooming Ludmyilla to discover his rival's secrets Kalyagin becomes paranoid following Reznik's death, Chopra's refusal to deal with him and the erosion of his businesses.

Heroin is being smuggled into India from Pakistan with Kalyagin's backing, using Chopra's ships to transport it globally. Alex's assistant Karin is suspicious that he is secretly transferring funds, leading him to make extra security measures but Rebecca also questions why he has a hidden second phone and makes her own enquiries, A call from Alex stops the heroin being loaded but Rebecca forces him to admit his involvement with Semiyan whilst in Mumbai Chopra's rivals get the better of him.

Semiyon rings Alex to tell him how he thwarted Kalyagin's plans in Mumbai but is then charged with raping a young man, Ezra Levi, leading Antonio to suggest to Alex that he transfers his interests to him. Instead, Alex travels to see Semiyon in Tel Aviv where Lyudmilla claims she can alibi him in exchange for his letting her go as a hostess. Semiyon is cleared but not without casualties and Alex is surprised to see Kalyagin at the airport, with a possible clue as to who framed Semiyon. Back in London, Alex's sister Katya hears disturbing news about her father.

Kalyagin sets out to hit the Godmans by revealing Dmitri's criminal past in Russia and Alex's money laundering. He sends Marius Jensen, a spy, to keep surveillance on the family, reporting Rebecca's decision to move out following Alex's refusal to admit his actions and Katya's support for her father's pregnant mistress Masha. Katya and Alex have proposals to protect their father whilst Alex has two visitors - Czech Karel Benes, anxious to save his -addicted daughter from Kalyagin, and Joseph, Semiyon's driver, keen to help his lover Lyudmilla. Then he is summoned to hospital.

Rebecca recovers in hospital, refusing to see Alex but her experience has hit the headlines, awakening international interest. Alex flies to Istanbul with Semiyon, who agrees to make concessions to Kalyagin in exchange for the Godmans' safety. This leads Alex back to dealing with Antonio and an offer to help Joseph free Lyudmilla. However Kalyagin still has many other enemies, as he discovers.
