Esteemed former Senator Randolph Kittridge succumbs to cancer while his son and daughter wrangle over a codicil to his will providing that his body be cryogenically frozen after his death. But when not only the ailing Senator but also his daughter die, Eames and Goren start looking at murder suspects and their motives.

Part 1 of 2: The murder of a crooked cop puts Detectives Goren and Eames on the trail of an obsessively clean doctor whose previous girlfriends all seem to be afflicted with a "zoonotic" disease -- or a virus found only in animals. Their probe also points to a preening veterinarian as well as a looming psychological component that is crucial to putting a bulletproof case together.

A car carrying a mother and her four young sons explodes, killing the three youngest boys in the back seat and landing the mother and oldest son in the hospital. It is found to have been the result of a planted pipe bomb, which initially leads Detectives Goren and Eames to think it was the work of suspected terrorists who were targeting the family because the father worked as an engineer who invented a new type of landmine currently being used in the Middle East. However, when those people prove to be clean, focus moves to the father of the boys. He shows little, if any, emotion over their deaths, and they find he was putting undue pressure on his wife, going so far as to make her cease taking needed anti-depressants, and even making her sleep in the boys' bedroom. It is then found out a piece of hardware equipment was purchased by someone in her family, then rigged so it would blow carbon monoxide out, but eventually returned. The focus is now on the mother. Goren and Eames realize she had done the rigging to the item, but returned it when she realized her first plan wouldn't work the way she wanted it to. Eventually the woman breaks down and confesses to the crime, stating between the pressures put on by her husband and the pressures she felt just for being a mother to four small boys and not being able to be the mother she wanted to be due to her Catholic beliefs, she tried to kill herself and the four boys, believing she'd "be a better mother in Heaven". She and her oldest son survived because he was playing with the power windows in the car at the time of the blast and the fact the windows were open provided ventilation that ultimately saved their lives. She is charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder, and is sentenced to 25 years in a plea bargain. Her husband, who technically had nothing to do with the crime, could not be charged with a crime.

Detectives Goren and Eames investigate the murder of a corrections officer. Since they are unable to get to a key witness and in order to help them with the case, detective Mike Logan is assigned to their team. The investigation leads them to the prison where the victim had worked, where secretive and possibly deadly things are happening.

The trail leads the detectives to a sexual predator who likes to brag about his exploits in his Internet blog, and who turns out to be rather well-connected.

A happy couple bantering about baby names is abducted. The woman is later found shot. Her husband has fled, leading police to identify him as the prime suspect. But as the meticulous investigation proceeds, the case becomes less cut-and-dry and what seemed obvious at first becomes less reliable: did this man really shoot his wife and, if he did, what was the motive? Could he have been actually forced to kill his own wife? Has such a murder happened once before? Could it happen again? Can a human be forced to kill the person he or she loves most in the world in order to survive an immediate life-or-death scenario? Traditional police work, past psychological experiments, science and history all lead Detective Zach Nichols (Jeff Goldblum) to uncomfortable, surprising answers that leave everyone wondering about their own human nature and will to survive.
