After waving off his good friend Amanda, jazz-loving young vicar Sidney Chambers is just in time to officiate at the funeral of solicitor Stephen Staunton, who shot himself. Sidney comforts the widow Hildegard, who plans to return to her native Germany but is then approached by Pamela Morton, wife of Stephen's partner, who claims Stephen would not have killed himself as they were planning to run away together. Sidney informs inspector Geordie Keating, and between them they unmask the killer. Sidney's success is marred by the news that Amanda, whom he secretly loves, has got engaged to another man.

Barely able to conceal his disappointment Sidney attends Amanda's engagement party to stuffy Guy Hopkins. His sister Jennifer brings her boyfriend, black jazz musician Johnny Johnson, and, when the engagement ring goes missing, bitchy Lilian Calthorpe leads some of the other guests in accusing Johnny. Next day Lilian is found dead and her jewellery discovered in Johnny's bag. Sidney is not convinced of his guilt and points Geordie towards Lilian's husband William as a likely suspect. Aided by new curate Leonard Finch Sidney and Geordie discover how Lilian died, linking it to the theft of the ring, solving the case in time for Sidney's birthday.

Upset that Amanda wants him to marry her to Guy Sidney hits the bottle but recovers in time to welcome new curate Leonard. He visits elderly Daisy Livingstone, who tells him that she thinks Arthur Evans, her daughter Isabel's boyfriend, is trying to kill her and later she does die but seemingly of natural causes and is cremated before a post mortem can take place. Daisy's sister Gladys - to whom she left everything - tells Sidney Daisy wanted to be buried and then Gladys also dies and Geordie arrests Arthur, who stands to gain from the deaths, though he protests his innocence. Indeed the true killer turns out to be motivated less by greed than by misplaced altruism.

After Sidney has rescued Marion Taylor from a house fire her husband Dominic accuses pub landlord Tobias Hall of arson and soon afterwards Dominic is murdered. Hall denies murder but admits to blackmailing Dominic, a closet homosexual, an act which indirectly caused the fire. Geordie investigates the murder though Sidney feels he should be at home with his sick baby. Another row erupts between the two men when Geordie arrests Dominic's young lover Ben and Sidney believes that he is motivated purely by homophobic prejudice. Fortunately Sidney works out who the real killer is and helps Geordie trap him before the detective returns to find his child has recovered and Sidney entertains Hildegard Stanton, who has returned from Germany.

Sidney takes Geordie to London where, as guests of Sidney's sister Jennifer, they visit the jazz club owned by her boyfriend Johnny's father Archie. Halfway through the evening Johnny's sister Claudette is murdered. She was about to elope with her lover Walter, who accuses Archie, an arrogant man, who brings in his friend inspector Williams, whom Geordie suspects to be corrupt. Indeed twelve years earlier Williams arrested Archie on suspicion of murder but released him. Archie believes that Claudette's slaying was revenge for those far off events and Sidney and Geordie set out to find the avenger. In the meantime Sidney feels guilty for having spent the night in the bed of glamorous vocalist Gloria and Guy, aware of the young vicar's attraction to Amanda, tells him that the wedding will now be in London.

Police constable Jones is murdered and a witness hears the killer say Merlin, leading Sidney and Geordie to the Merlin factory, where Geordie is also shot though Sidney believes the gunman mistook him for his real intended victim. Helped by Mrs Maguire and Leonard Sidney discovers that the actual and intended victims served in the same unit in the war and, whilst their commanding officer, Heath, is unhelpful, his nervous wife gives Sidney the names of other ex-soldiers. One of them, Robert Miller, tells Sidney about Spreenhagen, the site where Heath's men murdered unarmed German prisoners of war. The killer is clearly out to avenge them and, defying the inept and bullying inspector Benson, Sidney cracks the case, visiting the recovering Geordie to tell him the result.

After a day out with Geordie's family Sidney is arrested, following allegations in 15 year old Abigail Redmond's diary that she had sex with him. Later Abigail is found dead at the studio of photographer Daniel Marlowe, who took revealing shots of her and who has now disappeared. Young mechanic Gary Bell is also named in Abigail's diary, which nobody can find, but Gary suggests that Abigail's father Harding had a less than proper relationship with her. Then Sidney discovers that Abigail had a secret, which unlocks the mystery of how she died.

After lecturer Valentine Lyall falls to his death fro a Cambridge university chapel roof Geordie calls in ex college alumnus Sidney to help on the case. Valentine and student colleague Kit Bartlett shared a penchant for climbing high buildings but a witness is sure that the victim was pushed. After Geordie has been threatened by a gun-toting woman college master Montgomery informs him that Lyall was a British spy in pursuit of a Russian agent, the Tsar. Sidney and Geordie need to identify them and thus find the killer, whilst Sidney is still dealing with the aftermath of the Redmond death and starts dating forthright police clerk Margaret Ward.

Now dating police clerk Margaret, whose informality annoys house keeper Mrs Maguire, Sidney hears a confession by blood-stained Theo Graham, who believes he has killed his landlord Eric Whittaker. However Eric is very much alive - until some days later he is fatally run over by a hit and run driver, causing Theo to go on the run. Sidney and Geordie investigate the boarding house run by Eric and his seductive widow Vivian to discover other suspects and motives. Meanwhile gay curate goes to the cinema with a gentleman friend and Sidney's old flame Amanda, whose husband had warned him to stay away from her, returns to the area.

Sidney visits Gary Bell, charged with Abigail Redmond's murder, in prison, to local disapproval. Meanwhile widowed stable owner Reggie Lawson asks Sidney to exorcise the spirit of his wife Anna, who killed herself but next day Reggie is also found hanged. Sidney doubts that it was actually suicide and believes that the poltergeist evidence was manufactured, with Anna's brother Laszlo, Reggie's new wife Kitty and adoring housekeeper Mrs Elton being suspects. Success in one matter and failure in the other leads Sidney to seek advice from Amanda, who has troubles of her own with her bullying husband Guy.

Geordie arrests jewel thief Eddie Jones, who claims that the policeman is having an affair with his wife and has framed him. When Jones dies in custody, Geordie, the last man to see him alive, is prime suspect and, whilst starting to doubt his friend's integrity, Sidney sets out to prove his innocence. Meanwhile Amanda helps Sidney in his attempt to get Gary Bell an appeal but their efforts would seem to be fruitless, along with Sidney's failure to keep the peace between Mrs Maguire and Leonard, both of whom are trying to deal with persistent admirers.

Devastated by recent events Sidney hits the bottle and neglects parish duties, leading the archdeacon to suggest that Leonard replaces him. He is shaken back into reality when Sam Milburn, who impregnated Abigail, returns and soon after evidence appears to suggest that he has been murdered. Sidney is horrified to learn about Sam's unhealthy interest in under-age girls when a prime suspect owns to the killing but Sidney is not convinced and discovers who is really out to exact revenge on the former vicar. The case solved Sidney is cheered by news from Amanda.

Sidney's relationship with Amanda draws a veiled warning from the new arch-deacon - in addition to threatening phone calls. Geordie calls him in when philanthropic Dr Atwell is murdered and his body dumped in the church. The doctor appeared to anticipate his death and had made a will, the beneficiary being Ivy Franklin, though she pre-deceased him. Both had worked at a grim psychiatric hospital and Geordie believes they were murdered in revenge for the death of one of its patients - a girl called Bonnie. Sidney was innocently involved when he officiated at Ivy's funeral and is now a potential target for the killer - the voice at the end of the phone.

The entire village cricket team is sick when somebody poisons their beer but everybody recovers except young Pakistani Zafar Ali, who is found dead the next day. He was secretly in a relationship with Annie, the daughter of racist club secretary Geoffrey Towler, who took him tea on the night that he died and whom his distraught elder brother Munir accuses of killing him. However Annie suspects her father who found out about her and Zafir and had him beaten up. The discovery that Annie had a secret admirer who sent her gifts leads Sidney and Geordie of unmasking the killer though their private lives are not as tidy . Still under scrutiny from the archdeacon for his association with Amanda Sidney is accused of hypocrisy when he berates Geordie for having an affair with his considerably younger secretary, Margaret.

Leonard is injured in a post office robbery but the main suspect, recidivist Walter Dunn, was murdered before the crime took place. Two of his young employees at his garage, Martha Bennett and Frank Camber come under suspicion, Camber having form as a juvenile. However when there is another post office robbery Sidney suspects an inside job, leading to a resolution. At the same time Amanda's husband sportingly agrees to a divorce, Margaret gives Geordie a pregnancy scare and Leonard must mask his true sexuality with a marriage proposal to his friend Hilary.

Single mother Josephine Sutton apparently falls to her death at the factory where she was employed by religious Ezra Garston. She was separated from her son's father, nightwatchman Ricky Masters, Geordie's chief suspect but she had another, secret lover, giving Geordie another likely suspect though he must combat Masonic influences to make an arrest. A tormented Leonard attempts suicide as he heads ever closer to his show marriage to Hilary whilst Sidney accepts that he must choose between Amanda and the church and Mrs Maguire is unimpressed by the reappearance of her long-lost husband Ronnie whose claim to be terminally ill proves to be bogus.

Having discarded his dog collar and his calling Sidney winds up at a gypsy camp where Ronnie is also living, with the money he stole from Mrs Maguire. A wedding is in progress between Luella and Abraham, son of the suspicious Pal but Sidney is shocked to find Ronnie now has another, bigamous wife, the motherly Cora. Geordie is thrown out by the betrayed Cathy but Sidney calls for him when Ronnie is murdered and robbed. The thief is quickly discovered but it is Sidney who unmasks the killer before returning to Grantchester and an ultimatum from Amanda. Meanwhile the two Mrs Maguires reconcile and Geordie makes a last attempt to save his marriage.

Little Archie Reilly runs into the church, claiming that a man tried to abduct him, though Geordie thinks he is lying - until Archie's brother Jacob goes missing - and once more seeks Sidney's help. The boys' cowed mother Charlotte reveals that her strict husband Richard is a serial philanderer, suggesting a revenge motive but Geordie guns for the childrens' teacher, who sought to protect them from their dysfunctional parents and goes too far in his interrogation before Sidney uncovers the truth. As Geordie reunites with Cathy, there is romance in the air for two Grantchester residents whilst a third is less fortunate.

During the event, protestors disrupt Todd's speech and release fireworks, causing the audience to panic and leading to a crush as dozens of people try to escape through a locked door. In the chaos, a man is stabbed and killed by an unseen assailant. The murder sees racial tensions spike and Geordie is called in to investigate.
