22 year old gay Jake Vickers, son of the chief superintendent, starts his first day as a police constable in Brighton, partnering the experienced Ryan Draper, a single father, who is unimpressed by Jake's handling of a suicidal drug addict and an hysterical shop-lifter, accusing the youngster of nepotism. Detectives Jo Moffat and Carl Hawkins investigate a racist attack but meet hostility from the chief witness, an Indian shop-keeper who feels let down by the police. However Jake redeems himself when he catches the main perpetrator, saving Ryan in the process. Meanwhile lonely inspector Felix Kane averts tragedy when he pursues a desperate father who has abducted his young daughter.

Jake feels humiliated when WPC Donna Prager accidentally Tasers him whilst pursuing drug dealer Red Pete and the incident ends up on You Tube. Jo eventually arrests Pete but starts to feel that she is going nowhere in her affair with Jake's father, whose wife has cancer. Felix and Carl investigate the death of a mystery man in a sleazy hotel though both receive phone calls pointing up their domestic problems whilst Donna and partner Lino are too late to avoid disaster when an elderly widow takes drastic action against a burglar.

Lee McNair escapes from a prison van but the police are forbidden to break the speed limit in pursuit, leading to frustration and press criticism. Felix and Carl investigate a series of muggings of boys from Felix's old school and find that the headmaster has something to hide, as well as getting involved in a life or death situation with one of the boys whilst Jo and Jake are angry when battered Stacey Shawcross once more refuses to press charges against her violent boyfriend, though at least Jake gets a date with solicitor Simon Reddington.

After dealing with disgruntled dog owners and garden centre employees as well as an aristocratic time waster the police are called in when a banker's wife is kidnapped for ransom though Felix is shocked by the identity of the kidnapper and their motive. Jo is angry when a vicar drops the charges against Vinnie, a down and out he has employed who robs the church but returns the items. However Vinnie helps her out in a difficult situation, inadvertently caused by Ryan. Her affair over Jo is consoled by Carl, who has his own problems with Bethany.

Felix and Carl stake out suspected drug smuggler tug master Bob Hollins after his wife has reported that he is being threatened but a secret Carl has kept from Felix almost ruins the operation. After dealing with a woman who has been robbed by her Internet boyfriend Jo rebuffs Vickers' attempts to recommence their affair whilst Ryan freaks out on discovery that his son is gay, needing advice from Jake. Lino meanwhile gets a date with animal rescue worker Orla after retrieving a lost iguana.

The entire team pursues the ram raiders who made off with ATMs to a farmhouse. Jake acquits himself well in a fight but the heroine of the hour is Donna. However her partner Alice expresses concern for her day to day safety. Carl and Felix track down vulnerable teenager Eva Pryce, who has been seduced by an older man into living with him but when Eva attempts suicide it leads to Donna's suspension. Carl discovers Felix's problem with his elderly dementing father but walks into a row with his wife when he gets home, leading to his staying with Jo.

Jo locates a witness who has seen thuggish Reece Gutridge assault his girlfriend but Gutridge's solicitor Simon Reddington tricks Jake into creating a legal loop-hole which almost jeopardizes the case and Jake's resultant spat with Jo exposes her affair to the whole station. Ryan talks a guilt-ridden Jake, shocked at his boyfriend's duplicity, out of resigning. Felix investigates a serious case of gay bashing on a lonely, middle-aged man but the resultant enquiry puts Lino in danger when he encounters disturbed ex-soldier Michael Whylie who takes him hostage. The newly-reinstated Donna joins her colleagues in his rescue and ultimately each member of the team resolves their problems in their own way.
