Description ▼
We open with the credits "A Greendale Campus Television Production." Feathers litter the library, classrooms and hallways as a deep-voiced narrator tells the viewer about the longest pillow fight in community college history. We see still photos of the madness: grown men and women mercilessly beating each other with stuffed pieces of cloth. "It forever changed the lives of those involved," the narrator says. We see photos of the major players -- Jeff, Annie, Britta, Troy, Abed, Shirley -- and hear stories of their wartime valor.
But how did it get to this point?
Craig approaches Jeff as an unseen film crew follows to "document Greendale's Guinness record." Jeff comments that a film crew at the school always means disaster. Craig ignores Jeff and asks him to please intervene in the feud between Abed and Troy. An exasperated Jeff, who wants nothing more to do with this silly fight, puts imaginary friendship hats on Abed's and Troy's heads, but the feuding students promptly pretend to remove them.
Cue documentary. We see photos of Abed and Troy as the narrator explains the long friendship between the two, resulting in a magazine of their creation called "Friends Weekly." Together, they created New Fluffytown, a utopia made entirely of pillows. But when Guinness comes calling Troy wants to rapidly expand using blankets. The purist Abed demands they use only pillows, and declares world records to be "dumb." Hence, the split. Troy breaks off and begins construction of Blanketsburg. Eventually, the two nations encroach on each others territory and, when a single thrown pillow accidentally results in the collapse of a section of Blanketsburg, the fighting begins. It's civil war.
We learn that Pierce has sided with Troy, explaining that Abed is "weirder and more foreign." Shirley also sides with Troy and is promoted to second in command, prompting a miffed Pierce to defect to Abed's army. Now, it is midnight and Troy has promised to attack Pillowtown, the new name for New Fluffytown, if Abed didn't retreat. Soon enough, there is a high-pitched squeal and Troy's forces attack in the library. We see shaky, grainy cell-phone footage of the battle, which ends in six minutes with no discernible victor.
Britta tries to take pictures of the "sublime indignities" of war, but they are terrible. "Just because something is in black and white doesn't mean it's good," the documentary narrator intones. Pierce, meanwhile, breaks his glasses in the melee and claims another injury as the result of the fight: erectile dysfunction, swearing that it had never happened before. Jeff is seen riling up the troops on both sides in what is described as a "Ferris Buellerian attempt to delay school work." Annie provided "humanitarian relief" efforts to both sides, including removing feathers from the clothing of fallen soldiers with a lint brush.
Later, Pierce approaches Abed with plans to build a secret super weapon -- the rumors of which quickly reach Troy, who brings in Chang in response. Change recruits a special unit of preteen security interns and trains them to attack. They are named the "Changlourious Basterds" and, being kids, are particularly skilled at wielding pillows. Abed sees no choice but to unleash Pierce's weapon, which is Pierce in pillows that are stuck together with tape. The Iron Man-Michelin Man monstrosity lays waste to the Basterds.
The war escalates, especially after Troy intercepts an email from Abed to his generals detailing Troy's weaknesses. These include shiny things, the color red, boobs, and many more. The email ends with Abed saying that Troy is emotionally weak and intellectually insecure. Troy is hurt, and sends an angry text message to Abed hitting back by explaining that Abed had only one friend, Troy, because nobody else had the patience to put up with his general oddness. Finally, Jeff decides to step in. He has been reprimanded by Annie, who urges him to think of someone other than himself. Strangely, Jeff does just that.
So Jeff summons Troy and Abed to a "secret summit meeting." It doesn't go well. Troy proposes that the loser of the war move out of the apartment. The winner can stay. Abed agrees. "Ahhh, I wanted that to go different," Jeff says to no one in particular. Soon after, the final battle in the cafeteria begins. We see it unfold in dramatic still photos intercut with quickly edited cell-phone footage and set to soaring, melancholy music. The battle reaches a climax when Craig enters and stops everything. Turns out the Guinness representative isn't coming, after all (he has been fired apparently). "What a colossal waste of two-and-a-half days!" he yells before leaving the cafeteria.
Suddenly, the war is over. But the dispute between Troy and Abed has yet to end. The pair have a listless one-on-one pillow fight with each other for hours. Jeff points out that the two like each other so much that they'd rather right than not be together at all. Jeff then suggests that they put on their imaginary friendship hats. Troy and Abed look at each other for a long moment and agree to wear them. Then Abed points out that Jeff left the imaginary hats back in the dean's office. So Jeff plays along, returning to the dean's office to fetch the hats and then placing on them Troy and Abed. It's almost touching.

So Jeff plays along, returning to the dean's office to fetch the hats and then placing on them Troy and Abed. It's almost touching.

Abed and Troy are back to being best friends, playing a version of patty cake to demonstrate their shared love. "How come I'm not best friends with anybody in the group?" complains Pierce. The question receives a patronizing "Awww" from Shirley and Annie. Just then, Craig enters wearing a tiny train engineer outfit. He announces that a carnival is coming to town and, "on an unrelated note, I'm into trains now!" Britta says that she used a date a man who works in a carnival ... a man named Blade. This cracks up the group. Britta can't resist this man named after a kickboxing vampire movie. On a somewhat related note, Abed and Troy makes plans to watch "Blade."
Later, Jeff decides to change his shirt at his locker, a wardrobe change closely watched by Annie. Britta then approaches, saying that she needs to stay with Annie under lockdown for the weekend like some sort of "carny banging werewolf" -- lest she ends up sleeping with Blade. Robert then enters Craig's office, telling the dean to have Troy enroll with an A/C repair program, which Troy apparently doesn't want to do. "Have you forgotten that your school is under the A/C repair school's thumb?" Robert growls.
Meanwhile, Troy, Abed, Britta and Annie watch "Blade" at Annie's apartment. Britta begs Annie to give her back her phone, claiming to want to know if her mother is dying. Annie dismisses it as "junkie talk." She is desperate and is eventually dragged screaming into Annie's bedroom, accusing her friends of being "Hitlers," "monsters," and the "opposites of Batman." The friends slam the door and lock the Blade junkie in the bedroom. Moments later, Craig appears the front door in his PJs and carrying a bag of chips. "Boys night!"
Jeff and Shirley head to the carnival, where Pierce and Ben are spotted playing games together. "I decided to go outside the group for a best friend," Pierce explains. Pierce has even won Ben a stuffed horse. Jeff and Shirley then spot Blade, who is running the shooting gallery. Jeff swears he is not jealous, but insists on shooting some ducks. Back at Annie's place, Britta thanks her friend for keeping her away from Blade. She declares that Annie is like a sister to her -- and then asks for her phone back. "You're not manipulating me, are you?" asks Annie before handing over the phone.
Annie then leaves the bedroom and explains that she has switched out Blade's number for her own on Britta's phone. Sure enough, Annie receives a text from Britta saying that she is "dying to feel the warmth of your ...." The circle of trust has been broken. Then there is another text. And another. And another. Jeff, meanwhile, is shooting at the gallery and checking out Blade, who is relaxed and, according to Shirley, very "cool." Not as cool at Jeff, though, she quickly adds. Pierce and Ben, in the meantime, are enjoying cotton candy and each other's company. They laugh at nothing in particular in slow motion.
Back at Annie's apartment, Annie texts "go away" back to Britta. Troy, Abed and Craig tell Annie that is a terrible idea. Sure enough, Annie's phone begins to ring. "She was born in the 80s!" Troy says. "She still uses her phone as a phone!" Annie asks the boys to act like a carnival -- Troy starts babbling about "step right up!" and so on -- while she lowers her voice and grunts, acting like a carnival worker she has never met, scolding Britta for calling "him" at work. Britta immediately apologizes. "She's whipped by an imaginary douche!" Annie exclaims. Says Craig: "Hey, don't knock it until you tried it."
At the carnival, Jeff is desperate to figure out Blade's story, so that he might be able to figure out the high-school drop out/carny's hold over Britta. Shirley has had enough and, holding three giant stuffed animals Jeff has won for her during his extensive time at the shooting gallery, storms off to find Pierce, who is sitting on a bench with Ben. Ben wonders how they'll avoid fighting. Pierce suggests that they just "let it happen." "Don't tell me what to do!" screams Ben. We then watch a montage of their relationship, all five minutes of it, as melancholy music plays in the background. Pierce is very, very sad.
Annie frets on how to help Britta -- and Troy has an idea. He is going to pretend to be Blade being nice to Britta so that she will no longer like the carny. Troy texts something presumably sweet to Britta, who immediately emerges from her bedroom a cured adult. She is over Blade. Back at the carnival, Jeff explodes, asking aloud the secret to Blade's pull. "You dropped over 300 bucks at my booth, so I'll tell you," Blade says. "You want to know my secret?" Responds a very serious Jeff: "Yes, I do!"
Back at Annie's apartment, Britta says she is done with Blade because he is a "loser." This insults and saddens Troy, who leaves the room. Annie then checks her phone and sees what Troy texted. "Oh my God, what is wrong with you!?" she asks Britta, explaining that Britta was texting the group the entire time. "What happened to you?!" Annie demands. Just then, Jeff enters with news: 10 years ago, a bolt from a Ferris Wheel embedded itself in Blade's brain, destroying his ability to feel shame. "I have to go with him!" Britta says.
No, Jeff says. No. He launches into a romantic-comedy style speech, explaining that we all must learn to love ourselves before we can go to others. Annie and Britta appear to be touched. Oblivious, Abed watches "Blade." Suddenly, Pierce enters. He hands Annie his phone, announcing that she shouldn't let him call Ben. Pierce then locks himself in Annie's bedroom. Troy re-enters and sits down to watch "Blade" with the rest of the group. They all exchange smiles, having seemingly learned something about life.
All except for Abed. "This movie's fantastic," he comments.

Our favorite students study biology. Kingdom. Phylum. Class. Order. Genus. Species. "Kevin, Please Come Over for Gay Sex," blurts Pierce, explaining that he uses a mnemonic device. Britta and Troy share a flirtatious look when Craig enters, declaring himself the "Duali-dean of man!" Craig is dressed as a half man-half woman. Craig then announces that biology class is cancelled. Annie sees an opportunity and suggests that Britta and Troy go to lunch together at Senior Kevin's. Meanwhile, Craig wonders if his costume has "gone too far." "Come on, Craig," he says to himself. "Get your life together."
Later, Annie and Abed play a simulation of a "Dr. Who" like game in which Abed is the hero and Annie uses a ridiculous British accent. But Annie is so bad in her role that Abed has no choice but to quit. He is miffed ... and not just about the end of their geeky game. "You're mad at me for playing matchmaker with Troy and Britta," Annie says. "You're afraid you're going to lose Troy." Abed says he is simply angry because Annie is "messing with the group." Abed then explains that his simulation machine allows him to understand the brain functions of those around him. "Abed, it's cardboard tubes and a funnel," Annie says. Troy calls, wondering about Abed. "I worry about him when I'm not around," he says. "He's just extra sensitive in the Dream-a-Torium."
Annie then returns to the simulation chamber and takes the "Other People" device (a tissue box) and puts it in the place where the Abed device (a cardboard sign) used to be. In effect, Annie is forcing Abed to think of others first. This doesn't sit well with Abed, who holds his head in pain before falling to the floor. "I broke Abed!" Annie exclaims. "You're being scary weird instead of cute weird!" Moments later, Abed wakes up ... and morphs into Jeff, who explains they're on the set of a primetime drama set in a hospital. Jeff asks Annie to make love to him, and Annie tells Abed to knock it off and storms out of the Dream-a-Torium. Then, after thinking better of it, she returns.
Jeff transports both to a hospital lab where Troy and Britta are fooling around. Basically, they're patting each other and making exaggerated kissing expressions in the socially stunted world of Abed's imagination. Annie injects Troy with truth serum and he admits to many things, including using Hitler to win arguments on the internet, knowing nothing about wine and being attracted to Clive Owen. Finally, "I didn't get 'Inception!' I didn't get 'Inception!' Troy then begins to cry. Annie then demands to see Abed's files from the "hospital school." Jeff/Abed retrieves them. "He's a patient."
The pair run in place .. and end up transporting to the "last night of school, first year. The night we kissed." But Abed wasn't there, so whose memory is this? Jeff/Abed suggests that perhaps the Dream-a-Torium really works and this is Annie's memory ... or Leonard was watching from the bushes and told Abed. "I don't have cable," says Leonard as he emerges from the bushes. Jeff/Abed then suggests that Annie pushed Britta and Troy together and push Abed out of the picture so that she would end up with Jeff. Annie protests, saying that getting closer to Jeff would've just been a "bonus."
Moments later, Annie finds herself back in the simulation chamber. "Where do you want to go next?" Abed asks. Says Annie: "I want to be alone." They transport back to the "hospital school" and Abed morphs into a second Annie. The two Annies have an argument with each other. Real Annie says she is not really in love with Jeff, but "in love with the idea of being loved and if we can teach a guy like Jeff that then we'll never be unloved." That Annie is revealed to be Abed, who is promptly arrested by Chang, who locks him in a locker. A second Abed -- this time Annie -- enters. In the midst of the body switching, Pierce appears to announce that he doesn't "know what the hell is going on."
The real Abed is clearly a lonely guy, feeling put away by the others in metaphorical locker. "The scenarios you're running here are like great science fiction ... but they're accurate for crap," says Annie, who has now morphed back into herself and is trying to be comforting. "Your simulations are nothing more than anxieties ... You're afraid that you'll be alone." But guess what? That makes Abed just like everybody else, so he'll never be alone. Annie then says that they both need to get more comfortable "winging it."
Abed worries that the conclusion of the simulation is anti-climatic. So Annie imagines them on the deck of a starship. Explosions outside the cockpit! Using a thick and terrible British accent, she attacks a robot villain, punching it numerous times until it turns out to be Abed. Suddenly, the pair are back in the simulation room. "This is good stuff," Abed says. Coos Annie: "Thanks!" At the end of it all, Abed has gained a new power: empathy. Back in the study room, the gang returns to return to cram for the biology test. Troy says he had a good time at lunch and apologizes to Abed for missing the Dream-a-Torium. Abed says it's OK -- Annie did good in a pinch.

In a "Law and Order" opening, two janitors discover a -- gasp! -- yam has fallen from a lab table to its death. Or has it been murdered? That's the question Annie wants answered. Though it is the middle of the night, she has summoned Jeff and Marshall to the scene of the crime. "Our final project has been destroyed!" Annie says. "That was going to be an A-plus yam!" Marshall tells Annie that she and Jeff will receive a "passing grade," which isn't enough for Annie, who wants the top grade. "Now if you'll excuse me, I was watching 'Mama's Family,'" an annoyed Marshall says before exiting.
Shirley, Abed and Troy then enter -- and Annie enlists them in the investigation, reasoning that Marshall will give them an A if they solve the case. The next day, Pierce oversees the betting on an elderly arm wrestling tournament when the yam investigators enter. "Youth!" yells a contestant. "Scatter!" Pierce confesses that he forgot to water the yam and, by the time he arrived at the lab, the door was locked (his excuse: "I feel asleep in a sunbeam"). "You should be talking to someone who wants to hurt us: Todd!"
So Abed and Troy confront Todd, who also claims that the lab door was locked when he got there. "Lot of that going around," sneers Troy. The investigators soon figure out that the lab door gets locked at 8 p.m. Whoever got into the lab would have needed a key. So it's off to the office, where Fat Neil checks his records -- simultaneously expressing his condolences for the yam -- before revealing that a key to the lab was checked out by ... Magnitude. Magnitude, we learn, went to the library with the key in his book bag before the key was stolen. "Only one way to catch a dirtbag like that," Abed says.
Moments later, Troy sits at a library table "in disguise" as a student (complete with letterman's sweater). He announces that it's time to visit the restroom, leaving his book bag behind. Star-Burns appears from behind a stack of books and snags the bag. He is confronted by Abed and Troy and is soon in a dark room being questioned. Abed and Troy play good cop-bad cop. How do we know? "He's the bad cop, I'm the good cop," Abed says. "You can trust me.
But Star-Burns won't fall for such an the obvious trick (surprisingly) so Abed and Troy head to the morgue. Rather, they head back to the lab where a teacher has done an autopsy and explains that "this level of smooshing is consistent with someone stepping on the yam after it was dropped," she says. Later, Jeff suggests breaking into Star-Burns locker and finding dirt on the weirdo to use as leverage. He tells his fellow investigators not to get soft. So Abed and Troy break into the locker and discover a biology test tube. "Clean up on aisle busted," Troy says. Star-Burns then rounds the corner, sees the investigator ... and flees. A not-so-furious chase ensues.
Finally, Abed and Troy catch up with Star-Burns who explains that he stole the lab equipment only so he could build a meth lab in the trunk of his car. Star-Burns then claims that he saw Todd do the deed. During the next biology class, Jeff and Annie rise to present their case to Marshall, accusing Todd. Suddenly, the door opens and a man in uniform enters. It's Commander Archwood, who had the pleasure of leading Todd in Iraq. Archwood is staying on Todd's couch for the weekend because he's in town for a wedding -- and he won't stand for his former soldier being harassed.
Soon, both legal teams are in Craig's office (chambers?). "All you have is the word of this Mr. Star-Burns," says Archwood. And what was Star-Burns doing in the lab when he supposedly saw Todd? Jeff refuses to answer, explaining that the information is protected under a pinkie swear. Marshall steps forward, defending Jeff and Annie's right to prosecute and getting in Archwood's grill (In this conversation, Marshall Kane says, "A man's got to have a code," a nod to Omar from The Wire also played by Michael K. Williams. Dean Craig exclaims, "Awesome," after the reference). It all makes Craig very, very excited. Later, Jeff and Annie work into the wee hours of the afternoon on their case. Chinese takeout litters the lab. Abed and Troy enter with bad news: Archwood threatened Star-Burns, who has fled. The team's only witness is long gone. They have no case.
But will that stop justice? Not if Annie has anything to say about it (and she does, of course). Soon, the case/class begins. Todd is put on the witness stand (folding chair) in full uniform and denies the charges against him. Annie, wearing a smart business suit, attacks Todd, laying out his motive: his own yam that wouldn't bloom. "Did you kill our yam to settle the score?!" she demands. "Did stomping on its roots make you feel like a big man?!" Todd crumbles. "It was an accident!" he exclaims. Todd says he picked up the yam to look at it and was burned. He then dropped the yam. Annie breaks out into an awkward celebratory dance. Jeff then asks for a sidebar in Marshall's office.
Inside the office, Jeff urges Marshall to drop the case and give both his group and Todd a C. Annie is horrified. "A man has to have a code," explains Jeff, using the very words Marshall used earlier when confronting Archwood. "I can only assume there has to be a female equivalent to that -- a code-ette or something ... An innocent man might get an F." Back in class, Jeff stands for his closing argument. He goes to the yams, dropping each on the floor to the gasps of the class. When they hit the floor, they smoosh. Jeff explains that someone has been boiling the water the yams rest in at night -- making them extra smooshy (and thus, appearing to have been stomped on when dropped).
But one jar contains a yam that doesn't smoosh on contact with the ground. One jar contains water that hasn't been boiled. That jar belongs to Vicki, who is horrified at the accusation. Fat Neil then stands. "I boiled the yams!" he confesses. "Vicki's yam hadn't sprouted and I didn't want her to fail so I threw off the grading curve so she didn't have to go to summer school and we could finally have sex in my parents' cabin." Fair enough. Yells Marshall: "Holy crap! We are definitely dissecting pine cones next year!" Later, Jeff and Annie relax in Marshall's office when he gets a call. The meth lab in Star-Burns car has exploded. "He's dead," Marshall says.
The episode ends with a special thanks to Dick Wolf.

Annie, Abed, and Troy gather to watch the video will of the recently deceased Star-Burns (RIP). "If you're watching this, it means I'm dead ... or I'm just showing you this ... but I'm probably dead," says Star-Burns, explaining that he leaves herpes to his ex (she already knows it) and his Styx collection to no one (because no one appreciated Styx like he did). To Abed, Star-Burns leaves the task of creating a video tribute of his life. Abed then points out Star-Burns' ashes on the shelf. "If we rub it, will he come out and do celebrity impressions?" Troy asks. The answer: no. "Then I want it out of here," says Troy, unamused.
At the library, the gang considers the recent death. "I say we honor Star-Burns by discussing him the same amount we did when he was alive," Jeff suggests. In other words, they stop talking about him altogether. Annie objects, claiming Star-Burns was actually a "human being." Britta volunteers to help, pasting star-shaped stickers next to her ears and inviting the group to talk to her as if she were Star-Burns. "Why did you alway poop with the stall door open?" Troy asks. Ben then visits Craig with a request for increased security in light of Star-Burns meth lab explosion death. But Craig refuses to authorize the use of pepper spray and the banning of soft-serve ice cream.
Craig then dons a can-can dancer's dress and breaks some bad news to the study buddies: after the explosion, the chemistry teacher resigned and chem class has been cancelled. "Your grade is now incomplete, you'll have to make up the grade in the summer," Craig says. Says Jeff: "Noooooooo!" Later, Garrett sings "Ava Maria" at tribute to Star-Burns followed by Jeff's "eulogy" in which he salutes Star-Burns for doing the one thing everybody else has failed to do: get out of Greendale. He is followed by Annie, who strikes a surprisingly similar tone. "Our school flag is an anus!," she yells. "We're not even the best community college in our community!" Nobody, it seems, likes summer school.
The student body starts to get rowdy. Craig starts to get scared. Ben sees his chance and gets the dean to sign is list of new security protocols. Pierce, in the meantime, calmly asks Craig if, as a 10-year student, he can say a few words. "Let's burn this mother down!" Pierce screams. Suddenly, Ben's team of pre-pubescent security guards enters and begins to mace the students. Subdued, the gang heads to the infirmary where Craig informs them -- "the Greendale 7" -- that they will go before the board for starting a riot. Pierce suggests that the board question the crazy head of security who ordered 12-year-olds to spray everyone in the face with poison. Craig agrees.
Naturally, Ben isn't happy with the news. "I think we're going to have to let you go," Craig tells the security extremist. Ben decides to take matters into his own hands. He opens the door to let in Craig's doppelgänger -- right down to the heavy glasses and slumped shoulders. Ben then shoots Craig with a tranquilizer dart. The dean has been replaced by Ben's minion. At the board hearing, the Greendale 7 is now back on trial. Jeff rises and claims that the group was grieving the loss of Star-Burns -- only to have their emotions further inflamed by a psychopathic security employee. The fake Craig then enters and tells the board that the Greendale 7 "has to go." Coup complete.
Expelled from Greendale, the group retreats to Abed and Troy's apartment. "Things are bad, but we're together," Abed says. So the former students share a pizza and a bottle of booze.

The former Greendale students deal with the fallout of being expelled from school. Many are hungover. All are contributing to a pot luck lunch. Jeff's contribution is a dead battery, which he mistakes for a pack of Lifesavers. There is a knock on the door and Abed enters ... followed by a cop. Turns out Abed, dressed as Inspector Spacetime, was caught going through the dumpster outside Greendale. Dean Craig said he wouldn't press charges if Abed goes to a psychiatrist. So Abed does ... along with everybody else.
Jeff explains that Abed will never go to the doctor alone and was once caught trying to remove his own tonsils. Troy explains that Abed was once charming weird like Mork, but is now creepy weird like modern day Robin Williams. Britta, of course, considers herself the doctor's equal. We then see a montage of Abed becoming increasingly unstable, including narrating while Pierce eats a sandwich and videotaping Annie while she sleeps. But who hasn't been a bit crazy this year? We then see a montage of events, including Troy riding a motorcycle through the school and Britta showing up wild-eyed and disheveled asking how long Peyote lasts (for a friend, of course).
The doctor is impressed, and a bit taken aback. "I think I've heard everything I need to hear to make a decision," he says. "I think Abed should be committed." The group defends their friend, explaining that Greendale was a pretty messed up place that could mess anybody up. Cue montage of classes such as "Baby Talk" and "Advanced Breath Holding," "Ladders" and "Can I Fry This?" But it wasn't all bad, Jeff says. Cue montage of Craig showing favoritism to our favorite students by giving them the last pieces of pizza on pizza day (hidden in the trash) and telling them about a fire in the building before anyone else.
Abed then notes that all their good memories are of the dean. "It couldn't have been the real dean that expelled us," he says. "He loved us!" The former students then rise as a group and decide to go back to Greendale. But wait -- the doctor announces, as lightening flashes and thunder sounds outside, that "Greendale doesn't exist!" Troy gasps. Jeff wants a clarification. Turns out that Greendale exists, but it is actually an asylum. "These memories that you share, they are shared psychosis," says the doctor as he slams the door and cuts off the friends' exit. "I'm alarmed to see that you are relapsing together."
Everyone in the group, after all, came to the "community college" after their lives collapsed, the doctor explains. Cue a montage of all the students, who are dressed in ragged hospital gowns and living out the Greendale fantasy under the care watch of doctors -- one of whom is Craig. Back in the doctor's office, the doc wonders why none of them ever questioned why they were at a community for three years instead of two. Jeff's face falls. It makes too much sense. That is, it makes sense until Jeff and the gang leave the office and Jeff stops, declaring, "Wait! That made no sense!" He charges back into the office and overhears the doctor telling someone on the phone "they bought it."
Why did the doctor lie? "Because Greendale is purgatory and I am the devil!" says the psychiatrist. Jeff comments that the man's lies are getting worse. So the doctor finally spills the truth. First, he is not a real doctor. Second, the real dean was kidnapped and replaced with an evil double for the dean by Chang. "Even for him, that's insane!" Shirley says. Is it, though? Cue montage of Chang snorting snack food and shocking his own manhood with a stun gun. Back in the office, the group decides that it's time to rescue Craig.

Pierce has received a letter from the executor of his father's will with instructions to visit a warehouse in the middle of nowhere. Naturally, he takes all of his Greendale study partners with him. Gilbert, the old man's dignified assistant, enters and explains that he served Pierce's father for decades. "Before that, I was just a teenager who read the Bible to him in the bath," Gilbert explains. Then Gilbert reveals that Pierce's father has spent the last 30 years developing a video game. It was the man's dying wish that Pierce play this game with his friends. So, the gang sits down inside individual gaming chambers and begins to play "Journey to the Center of Hawthorne."
So from here on out we're inside a old-school Nintendo, 64-bit video game. Each of our beloved characters is a pixelated sprite that runs, jumps and quips through the fantasy landscape. Pierce's father soon appears as a floating head in the sky, explaining that whoever first reaches his throne wins ... Pierce's inheritance. "Worst ... son ... ever!" Pierce's father laughs before disappearing. Yet it soon becomes clear that Gilbert, who is also inside the game, has ulterior motives: he wants to punish Pierce and steal his fortune. Cue a scene in which the pixelated Gilbert massacres the gang using animated throwing knives and the such. This makes Jeff mad. Game on.
After respawning in the study room, the gang decides to fight together -- for "friendship," says Britta, who then accidentally kills Pierce. "I guess there's hug button," she says. So Pierce respawns again and the team heads out, vowing to protect Pierce so he can get to his father's throne before Gilbert. They soon come to a town and, knowing video games very well, Troy suggests they split up and search for supplies. Annie and Shirley head to the blacksmith to buy weapons, but Annie accidentally sets the man on fire. He runs screaming through the shop until Annie murders him with an axe -- to put him out of his misery. Shirley is horrified, video game or not. But when the blacksmith's wife enters, she gets into the swing of things and burns the maiden alive. "Don't look at me that way," Shirley tells Annie. "These are your loose ends."
Outside, Pierce and Troy appear naked having lost all their clothes in a virtual poker game inside the village tavern. Suddenly, Gilbert appears with a newly developed ability: shooting lightening bolts! Annie is quickly vaporized. Britta then prepares to drink a "super strength" potion she concocted, but she messes it up and drops it, getting herself killed in the process. Gilbert grabs the potion and drinks it. Luckily, Britta messed up when she made the potion because Gilbert's virtual skin quickly melts off, leaving a pile of bones. So the team moves on to the Black Cave (after surviving the Valley of Laziness and Gay Island), where the throne is located. Inside the Black Cave, the team is soon attached by a pack of wild Jive Turkeys. They defeat the Jive Turkeys while Britta notes how racist Pierce's father must have been.
They then approach the castle when Gilbert reappears -- now with increased powers. He has clearly cheated and made himself all but invincible. He destroys the pixel bridge and decapitates Pierce. Back in the real world, Jeff rips off his headset and confronts Gilbert for cheating and, worse, getting caught. He is joined by Pierce. Gilbert explains that he is actually Pierce's half brother (GASP!) and that he was more of son to dad than Pierce ever was. Gilbert and Pierce then return to the game and vow to defeat Gilbert. But how? When they pass through the village again, they discover that Abed has stayed behind, married a village woman (the daughter of the dead blacksmith) and created a palace for himself with hundreds of baby Abeds. It's impressive.
Gilbert approaches the throne, but is confronted by Pierce's father, who won't give up his inheritance so easily to a son he sired with a "temptress." Dad attacks Gilbert, who is saved by an army of hundreds of baby Abeds. The Abeds and the Greendale Seven then attack Pierce's father and destroy him. Back in real life, the Pierce approaches Gilbert's gaming chair. The team has decided to forfeit so Gilbert can have the money. "You were right, you were more a son to him than me," Pierce says. "We've only been playing this game for a few hours, but you've been playing for your whole life. It's time for you to take your reward." Back inside the game, Gilbert slays his father.
Before leaving the warehouse in real life, Abed makes sure to download the game onto a flash drive. "Hello, my love," he says. "I said I'd come back for you."

We see a commercial, propaganda really, for the and improved Greendale, which has been saved by valiant security chief Ben Chang. At the end, we see the dean, but he's obviously a "deanolganger." That's according to the Greendale Seven, who try to convince Officer Cackowski that the real dean has been kidnapped. "If I catch any of you within 50 feet of Greendale, I'll throw you all in jail," the cop warns. So how will the gang save the dean, reenroll and continue their educations? They stake out the Greendale campus using cool binoculars (like telephones for your eyes, Troy says) and disguises.
They soon see a flier announcing a huge party for Chang's birthday. Chang has taken over the dean's office and equipped it with an enormous throne. There, he lords over his security staff of pre-teen boys. "It's just like Stalin back in Russia times!" Britta declares. Says Annie: "We need somebody on the inside." Troy says he might know a guy. That guy is an air conditioning repair annex official, who reveals that the dean is being held in the basement of the cafeteria behind an "Oceans Eleven" level of security. The final challenge is a locked door with a single key that hangs around Chang's next. The heist is on.
But there's a catch. The AC guys will only help out if Troy enrolls in the AC school, which means he would no longer be able to hang out with his friends. Jeff says no -- they will instead go ahead with the elaborate heist plan. Cut to Chang's elaborate birthday party where the security chief is dressed, appropriately, as Napoleon. A chef with a terribly phony beard enters, pushing a giant cake. It's Shirley, who intentionally plugs the toilet, making it overflow. Enter Abed and Troy, wearing terribly phony mustaches, and posing as plumbers "Barry" and "Rod." The faux plumbers begin breaking through the bathroom wall into Chang's office/throne room with sledgehammers.
Meanwhile, Jeff and Britta enter the party disguised as a rock-n-roll magician and his assistant.Of course, Change is anxious to volunteer for their trick, which involves strapping the birthday boy to a giant spinning wheel. The key soon flies off onto the floor and Britta grabs it. Inside Chang's office, Troy retrieves the security codes to the AC annex and relays them to Annie, who is dressed as a 12-year-old member of Chang's security force. She punches in the code, grabs the key from Britta and enters the holding cell.
But Pierce appears to ruin it all when he enters the party dressed as his "swami character," which is racist and so phony that it doesn't fool anybody -- not even Chang. He and Jeff are soon "made." But then -- plot twist! -- it turns out that appearing for the plan to fail was all part of the plan. FLASHBACK as we see Shirley slip a note into a sandwich which is then delivered to the real dean. It tells the dean to hide because the study group is on the way. Then, the fake dean is used as a decoy to distract Chang, who thinks he has located the real escaping dean, who is being held in the bathroom by plumbers Abed and Troy. In the meantime, Britta retrieves the real dean, who is happy to be rescued but disappointed it had to be by Britta.
The whole gang is triumphantly leaving the school when Chang and his baby faced goons appear. This time the operation is really foiled. "Getting caught the first time was part of the plan," Shirley cries. "This time is because we suck." Chang then locks the Greendale Seven and the dean in the cell. It appears to be hopeless ... until Troy looks into the security camera and nods. Suddenly, the giant fan in the wall stops spinning, providing a way out. Did Troy just enroll in AC school. Britta suspects as much. But there's no time to lament Troy's sacrifice. The gang runs to the storage room where Change has rigged a giant pile of fireworks to go off. Abed cuts the wire -- just in time -- when Change enters. "You have foiled me for the last time!" he roars.
Actually, that's not true. The Greendale board members enter having discovered the dean and the fake dean slap fighting in the hallway. Chang's kidnapping plan is exposed. Chang makes a run for it and the board agrees to forgive the Greendale Seven. Later, Troy packs his bags for AC school. Pierce offers sage advice: "Never wear a rubber." Jeff then offers even more sage advice: "Never listen to Pierce." Britta gives Troy a lock of her hair. Before leaving, Troy whispers something inaudible into Abed's ear. After Troy is gone, Annie asks what was whispered. "He said, 'I know you hate it when people do this movies,'" Abed explains. The episode ends with Troy being welcomed with open arms by none other than Robert Laybourne.

The study group formerly known as the Greendale Seven eats lunch and tries to study for a biology exam when the dean enters dressed as a construction worker because he is "building to big news!" Turns out Subway is out and Shirley and Pierce's sandwich shop is in. It's great news except that Pierce and Shirley immediately begin fighting over who will be the majority owner. Annie asks Jeff to intervene, but he refuses, saying he has wasted enough time playing super-sarcastic group leader. "I am here to replace my fake bachelor's so I can get back to my life as a lawyer," Jeff says.
Britta, meanwhile, announces that she will be leading therapy sessions for Abed who is distraught over Troy's recent enrollment in AC repair school. Back at the apartment, Abed is hearing voices. He then sees ... himself! Only with an evil goatee. "This can't be happening," says the real Abed. Troy, meanwhile, is told by Robert that he is The One that has been prophesied through the ages of AC repair. "You are the True Repairman, Troy," Robert says. "You fixed not only air conditioners, but the men who fix them."
Later, Shirley approaches Jeff in the library and asks for help. Jeff wants nothing to do with it. They are soon interrupted by the dean, who decides that the issue will be settled in Greendale Court. Pierce, who has been hiding behind faux bookshelves, brags that he "was born in the courtroom, sued it for my own placenta and won!" Jeff then agrees to help Shirley before his final. In Abed's apartment, Abed confronts his goateed self, who convinces the real Abed to let him deal with Britta as she is likely dangerous as a therapist. Britta then enters and agrees to talk to "Evil Abed" rather than "Lame Abed," but the tables are soon reversed. "Tell me about your parents, Britta," sneers Evil Abed. Britta's eyes go wide. "Ummm ... no?" she squeaks.
In AC repair school, Troy learns that Robert has been killed after making a "rookie mistake" repairing a unit. The new vice dean, the same man who recruited Troy during the recent rescue of dean Craig, quickly dismisses Troy's suspicions and releases the new recruit so he can be with his friends. But something is amiss -- and Troy knows it. In court, Jeff is super laid back until he spots Pierce's new attorney: it's Alan, the attorney who got Jeff disbarred in the first place. Alan viciously attacks Shirley's character, noting a Facebook post when she said she would sell her son to be with Denzel. It was a joke, but nobody's laughing. Now Jeff is getting angry. His only question when Pierce takes the stand: "Know any good jokes?" Three racist jokes later, the entire audience is throwing things at Pierce. "No further questions," Jeff says.
Evil Abed, meanwhile, has left Britta broken and shaking and has now decided to cut off Jeff's arm. Wearing dark glasses, smoking a cigarette and still sporting a goatee, he carries a bonesaw towards the courtroom. Troy, in the meantime, breaks into the coronation of the new vice dean and declares himself the True Repairman. He challenges the vice dean to a fight in the sun chamber. The sun chamber is a giant box enclosed in glass and containing two AC units. Two men enter and try to fix the units as the temperature is slowly increased. The competition ends when one man relents ... or dies. The battle begins.
Back in court, Alan warns Jeff: lose the case or lose his job in the real world. Turns out Alan is now running Jeff's old firm. Shirley tells Jeff that he should throw the case -- he should have what he wants. Jeff then has a long-awaited revelation. "Helping only ourselves is bad and helping each other is good," he tells the courtroom. He is overheard by Evil Abed, who pauses in his evilness. "Throw this case out of court, it's dumb," Jeff concludes. Inspired, Pierce stands and withdraws his complaint. Evil Abed becomes regular Lame Abed. Pierce fires Alan, and as Alan leaves, he tells Jeff that he was the one who got him disbarred. Jeff replies, "I know... and I never thanked you for it".
Troy, in the meantime, quickly repairs his AC unit and relaxes in 68 degree temperature while the vice dean's side of the sun chamber reaches 145 degrees. "I'll kill you! Just like I killed him!" he screams at Troy. Everyone gasps at the revelation. As if he is hearing Jeff's speech, Troy finally reaches over and fixes his competitor's unit. He then sees the ghost of an approving Robert. The two nod at each other. The other repairmen grab Robert's killer and begin to shout about taking him to some sort of torture chamber. Troy tries to interject some sense: "No! Take him to the POLICE! He murdered someone!...You guys are weird." Back in court, everybody congratulates Jeff. "You were like a white Blair Underwood!" Shirley exclaims. Abed apologizes to Britta. Then, Troy reenters and embraces ... Abed. Oh, and then Britta too.
As another year ends, things change for the better. Pierce and Shirley open their sandwich shop, Troy moves out (and possibly in with Britta), while Abed dismantles the dreamatorium with Annie's help.... though he keeps a small one for personal use. Jeff finds the courage to begin searching for his father. And while the Dean of City College plans a new attack (with Chang looking on from the air ducts), a character thought to be dead is revealed alive...with a new occupation. We fade out to white, with the hashtag, #sixseasonsandamovie

Jeff, Britta, Annie, and Shirley have gathered to say goodbye to Troy before he leaves for his trip around the world. As a going away present they give him a universal translation device. Britta tries to get the group to acknowledge that they are sad that Troy is leaving but they try to ignore her.
The Dean comes on the intercom with an announcement. He and announces that Abed wants to send off his friend Troy with a special gift: a school wide game of "Hot Lava", a game where players have to avoid touching the floor or they will be "killed" by the "lava." The study group enthusiastically agrees to join in, except for Britta who sees it as a way for Abed to avoid engaging with his real feelings about Troy's departure. Abed announces that, in order to motivate everyone to play he has offered a prize to the last person alive: his near mint copy of Space Clone issue #1, valued at $50,000 by the comics authority. Across campus, people scramble on top of chairs, tables, and lockers.
Some time after dark. Britta climbs across objects which have been placed on the floor, creating makeshift walkways. She find Professor Ian Duncan and explains that she is staying in the game so that she can talk to Abed and get him to deal with his feelings. Duncan explains that he's "not afraid to push a girl into fake lava" and goes after Britta but she is saved by Annie and Jeff who show up and knock Duncan onto the floor.
Britta agrees to go with Annie and Jeff so they can find Abed. The three of them use a couple of plastic chairs to "centipede" down the hallways, placing one chair in front of the other and then repeating the process. As Britta explains her motivations to Jeff, Annie spots a large stack of chairs at the end of the hallway which will potentially give them the mobility they need to win the game.
When they centipede closer to the chairs they start hearing noises from the lockers around them. Suddenly, the Locker Boys spring out, using objects like crutches and mops to menace Annie, Britta, and Jeff. The Locker Boys are lead by Chang who demands that the trio give them their chairs, their food, and the names of their same sex celebrity crushes. Before the Locker Boys can attack, Troy and Abed "inchworm" into the hallway, using two chairs each to crawl across the floor. They assume an "intimidation stance" and the Locker Boys attack.
Just then Buzz Hickey arrives, driving a motorized contraption he has made. The members of the study group flee as Hickey barrels down the hallway, knocking over the Locker Boys. As he "dies" Chang admits that his same sex crush is Nathan Filion.
Hickey then comes after the study group. As they flee, Abed tricks Britta into leaving the centipede formation and he and Troy abandon her. Troy promises to remember "how you always slowed us down." As Britta tries to flee on top of a garbage can, Hickey stops his cart, astonished that they abandoned her. He says that he's only in the game to help pay for his son's gay wedding. "The flower's alone, you have no idea." He explains. "I know" Britta says "I lived in New York." He tells her he'll give her a ride.
Abed, Troy, Annie, and Jeff arrive at "Shirley Island" a refuge which Shirley has created in the cafeteria. When they inform her that Britta is dead she notes her passing on a board divided between "Christians" and "Secular" students. Abed says that legend has it that Shirley Island is the location of "The Orb" and pressures her to reveal its location. Troy warns Abed that he doesn't want people to hate him on his last day. This seems to get to Abed but before he can go further they hear Hickey calling them on a bullhorn.
Hickey has a group of a half dozen "chair walkers", students who have duct taped chairs to their feet for added mobility. They threaten to attack Shirley Island if the inhabitants don't surrender. Britta then comes out on a rolling chair, using two plungers for propulsion. She tells them that she will force them to confront their feelings. Abed and Troy are forced to admit to their friends that they left Britta for dead. Shirley refuses to surrender, stating that she is missing her son's birthday for this. Britta then orders the chair walkers to attack.
As the chair walkers begin to tear apart Shirley Island, Shirley orders Leonard to "butter them up". He then pumps popcorn butter onto the floor, causing many of the chair walkers to slip and fall. Leonard taunts them with "Cirque du So Long you high stepping acro-bastards!". Annie and Jeff board rolling chairs and use a cable to snare and trip the remaining chair walkers, but Annie falls off the chair and 'dies' in the process.
Jeff steals one of Britta's plungers and challenges her to a duel, while trying to engage her in witty trash talk. However, Britta ignores his attempts to bait her into a knock knock joke and bests him at the duel, knocking him to the floor and taunting him by saying "Who's there, bitch!? Floor! Floor!"
While Jeff and Britta duel, Abed asks Shirley for The Orb, saying that with it he can save Shirley Island. She explains that the Orb isn't on Shirley Island, the Orb IS Shirley Island. She then reveals the Orb, a giant inflatable ball which people can ride in. Abed and Troy get inside and use it to attack Hickey, singing "Troy and Abed in a bubble!". Hickey roars past them on his scooter and uses a knife to cut the Orb, slowly releasing its air.
Troy and Abed flee down the hall in the Orb, with Britta and Hickey giving chase. Britta then jumps on top of the Orb, telling the two "I'm going to force you to face your true feelings even if it kills us!" Britta is knocked off the Orb and onto Hickey's scooter when the Orb rolls trough a doorway and into the basement.
Abed and Troy escape the Orb and begin climbing across shelves. Troy says that maybe the game has gone on long enough but Abed doesn't want it to end. He explains that he's seeing real lava because Troy is leaving and wanted to create a game so that everyone else would see the same thing as him. Hickey and Britta arrive in the basement, using a book case to "surf" down the stairs. Troy tells Britta that Abed is really seeing lava. Hickey pushes the shelves, knocking them over and forcing Abed to hang from a ceiling pipe. Angry at Hickey, Britta pushes him onto the floor.
Abed explains to Troy that he doesn't think the lava is there because Troy is leaving. Rather, the lava is there because he can't let go. He lets go of the pipe and falls the floor where he "dies" and remains unmoving. Britta goes over to Troy and they try to get Abed to get up. But they realize that Abed's commitment to the game won't allow him to simply come back to life. Instead, Britta, looking at Abed's copy of "Space Clone" gets the idea to "clone" Abed. They make a cloning machine out of boxes and use it to "clone" Abed. Abed gets up and explains that Britta's cloning worked, but has cured him of his excessive emotionality. He says that he's ready to let Troy leave but Troy wonders if he himself is ready to go. Abed explains that Troy can send his clone instead and Troy agrees, falling backward onto the floor.
Later, everyone gathers outside Greendale to say goodbye to Troy. Troy tells Annie that he wishes he had paid attention to her in High School and that he missed out on four years of her friendship. Jeff tells Troy that he's never even been outside of Colorado and envies Troy's adventure. As Troy prepares to board Pierce's boat, the Childish Tycoon, which is parked outside, he says that Pierce arranged for someone to travel with him to verify that he actually accomplishes the task. That someone turns out to be Levar Burton who appears on the deck of the ship. A surprised Troy boards the boat and he and Levar Burton ride off.
